How about alternating different sample types (do, dah, pap, etc.) across the keyboard?

that's not an alternative to me. The way to play it with velocity layers is sth very much different, especially for this scat sound. It's just very well playable and that is what I really like about it just as much as the sounds themselves.
Anyway I see it seems to be much more complicated than I though it would be so I guess if I wanna play Roland jazz scat I'll have to bring roland keyboard and that's it... But just for one sound this seems to be overload
