Solo Synth in NIN Closer Live Version

Post by Rackmount »

Greetings,

I have been working to develop synth sounds to cover NIN Closer and have made pretty good progress so far. While it is easy to take isolated tracks and create samples and then map them onto keys, I have taken the time to listen and try to recreate without using cut and paste samples. So far so good with main bass riff, pan flutes, electric staccato/gated keys, and distorted phased guitar. I'm now trying to recreate the solo synth sound from a live version (Nine Inch Nails - Closer (Live: Beside You in Time - Unedited)) that starts at 2:49. I can hear a chirpy steel drumish sound with a bit of white noise. Not sure how to recreate without any samples by using just the synth, piano, and organ sections (or any combination of those). I'm open to any and all suggestions.

Maybe start with an electric piano to cover the steel drum aspect, add a bit of autowah for chirp, and perhaps some distorion to get noise? Didn't get me there, though I can hear some bits that are.

Thank in advance to any responders.

Best,

Rackmount

It sounds like a ring modulation (RM) effect is being applied to the synth. RM is interesting to play around with, it can make the upper range of a Grand sound like a toy piano.

Thanks for your input. I have seen and used many of your patches and found them to be pretty darn good at capturing the essence of sounds you are aiming for. I will investigate RM a bit and see what I come up with on my existing and perhaps a newer version.
