You're the Voice - John Farnham

Post by Eriknie »

What piano is used here?
I tried Bright Grand with extra brightness/EQ en short echo en some compression, but it's too warm. Needs to be more metallish (?) cold
Perhaps it is a RD1000/M1 piano?
Anyone has a clue how to get this closer or what was used to record this?

:thanks:

Hi,

I would try the DigiGrand 2 with bright EQ of the piano section and probably some additional brightness from the EQ of the effects section, eventually layer it with the Bright or Silver Grand and play with the EQ for the grand as well

Thanks, i tried that. When played at max velocity it is getting better.
It would be great if I could turn of velocity or only play between 80% en 100% velocity....
This seems not possible.

I tried the Korg M1 sample in the sampler section and that is single velocity and sounds bad in a good way, seems to nail the sound much better.
add some reverb, slap-echo and slight compression --> voila

Did you set KB Touch to 3? That should help as well

I play it with the sounds and settings as follows:

Piano is the Bright Grand which I think have loaded in XL, and I have split the keybed to play the synth, file is A1 The Prophet, as well on my nord.

EQ:
Bass 0.0 dB
Freq 668 Hz
Gain - 3.0 dB
Treble + 15.0 dB

Keyboard touch is set to zero, I‘m hammering the piano to get it as brilliant as possible.

Reverb Dry/wet 5.7

Eff 2 to synth only: 1.6 Hz

Synth:
Attack 0.5 ms
Release 545 ms

Split point as visible, I play the synth on the keys below the drawbars and the piano below „Effects“.

The bagpipe comes from my korg X50.

Cheers from Germany

Edit: I should have added the octave shift infos:
Synth is set to +1 (lower part)
Piano is set to -1 (upper part)

Turning on the compressor will help as well. Some grand piano is used in the live version, but most of the time the piano is buried in the mix. Even in the recorded version, the piano is mixed down pretty far.

Note the Yamaha KX-5 the keyboard player is wearing, I had one of those for years-
