Please forgive this request, perhaps others may be seeing this also. May I request that admins to this site please go through the nord sample list and remove broken links or repetitions of same files? I was trying to build a sample archive of all submitted samples and came across a series of corrupted links and repeated files by users, etc. If we could tidy this up and make it so that the database could be searched alphabetically, etc this would be easier to work through. I realise it's an ask, but would help us.
That would be quite a job unless there is some way of running a script or similar. I cannot think of a way of finding out if two files called "mypiano.nsmp" with different sizes are actually different samples or the same sample but one of them broken. nsmp files might have a checksum somewhere, and one could use that to tell which does not match the checksum, but without the format being open...
Or are you referring to this link?: nord_sample_collection.php
If so, can you point out which files are broken?
it is indeed the link nord_sample_collection.php which shows a number of samples which produce 404 errors or are duplicates. I lost the will to live going through this with a screen reader as a blind user.
Hi, I had a quick look, clicking from samples 949 to 1003, i.e. on the file names, not the "link", prompted me to save every one of them. No broken hyperlinks in there so far. I do not know about the remaining 948 files, but they are kept all locally in the forum server.
I wonder if there is a problem with the screen reader directing you to the wrong link. If you could tell at least a couple that do not take you to the downloaded file, we can take a look.
If you get a 404 error, then I wonder whether the files might have been deleted by the person who posted them (their right to do so, of course and we cannot do anything about).
These users thanked the author Mr_-G- for the post:
Also I just checked and the "link" takes you to the posted message. If the user decided to close (and delete) their account, perhaps the post does not exist anymore and that is the error you are getting?
There do seem to be some issues when clicking on MP3 demo audio files. Sometimes several different hyperlinks for these produce the same audio file result. It can be very confusing for sighted members, so hard to imagine how difficult that could make things for blind members. This has been the case for some years now, but given that this is an all-volunteer effort and, as pointed out above, something of a Herculean task to go through 1000+ samples in the list, it's not clear whether there's really a solution to this.
ok, fair enough, it was only a tentative request / suggestion, however, as Pablo has rightly said, it's a challenge to do this.
The issue isn't the screen reader's direction, as each heading and link / object is directly handled by keyboard or mouse based navigation on the mac running VoiceOver, the issue is a number of missing files and as rightly said, because creators may have removed them as is their right to do so, the links are still resident. there are a number of repeated files same name, same creator, either done in error or if there was an issue uploading data etc.
Anyway, I'll have another "more concerted effort" in downloading the sample archive but it would be nice to organise the samples by file name as an example.
valid points and thanks for Mr G and Pablo to clarify things and chime in.
Indeed apologies for the imperfection in the libraries, in particular when using screen readers etc.
Just some background: these user collections are basically all uploaded samples/patches on this forum.
Technically, I take a bunch of SQL tables combining information to have the names, links, IDs, usernames etc. But as already said, fully automated is not possible, since it is not fully standardized (as an example, mp3 files have in most cases different names than the sample, are uploaded before or after the sample, so I consider all mp3 samples uploaded around that sample.)
Anyhow, attached the Excel file with all the information showing how it is combined. IN case someone wants to work on it / contribute, do some manual checking and cleaning (only columns d-G need to be edited!) You are welcome to!
Hopefully over the holidays will have some time to do some cleaning!
since this is a volunteer-driven forum, and since the task being considered requires a significant time investment by someone with significant skills in that area (which I do not have), I think that it would be appropriate to allocate some funds toward this effort.
Accordingly, I am volunteering the sum of 100 Euros to the cause.
THIS OFFER IS CONTINGENT ON OTHER FORUM MEMBERS COMING UP WITH A TOTAL OF 100 Euros
(from one or any number of sources) TO MATCH MY OFFER.
C'mon folks -- ten people put up 10 Euros each and this can be a done deal.
Bless, Pablo
