Re: Soulfull Rhodes
I don't think you can reproduce it exactly using the currently available EPs, but IMHO you can get sufficiently close to be happy with it. It's mostly a matter of tweaking, and a lot of it comes down to personal taste. As a starting point, you could try:
But in the end, I think the "right" EP sample is just not there (yet, hopefully). Something like JaZzMaN251's MK II sample could work, but only with velocity layers, of course. This experiment I made with that sample might also help if you are prepared to do even more tweaking: http://www.norduserforum.com/nord-user- ... t3993.html
- the MK V sample -- This might be surprising, but I've found it to work best because of its "clean" sound (not sure whether this is the right word to describe it; I'm definitely no expert).
- the "Small" amp sim
- some treble boost (though this probably depends a lot on the song and arrangement)
- a high dynamics setting -- I think it's important to be able to lay down chords very softly and play strong accents occasionally. (I can't do that very well on my SW73, but it tends to work much better using a weighted controller keyboard.)
- a bit of chorus, slow and subtle enough that you don't hear it as an effect of its own
- optionally some tremolo or panning
- relatively little reverb

Re: Soulfull Rhodes
I have the feeling that the current samples AND the dynamic response of the keyboard (at least in the NS2-88) are not ideal for this level of emulation.

Maybe there is no better tips than the ones given by FunKey just above.Papamotif wrote:Finaly! Over 140 views and no tips!
The targeted sound is nice and polished in a mastering work that does not ease its reproduction.
It sounds FM (layered on a EP sample), and to say, it sounds "Yamaha Motif" to me, but maybe I'm influenced by you username

Re: Soulfull Rhodes
Thanks frantzkb!
I used to be a Papamotif.... But I've been PapaNord for many years now!
I think there must be a way to achieve something close to this sound! Frank Mccomb gets somekind of the same sound with a Rhodes and some effectboxes....

Re: Soulfull Rhodes
I continued to experiment a bit with JaZzMaN251's sample, and found a synth setting I could use to "enhance" Clavia's Mk V sample in one octave. It's still not quite there yet, but I thought I'd share it anyway because I don't know when I will have time again.
(You also need this sample: http://www.norduserforum.com/nord-user- ... t3993.html)
Here is a short demo. Listening to the song again, I guess I should have used more chorus and played a little less dynamically. It also sounds like the recording was clipped, or the overdrive setting was too high. (Sorry, I can't redo it now because the neighbors tend to hear the sound of the keys being pressed down. Oh, and I didn't have enough time to figure out the correct chords, either.)
You can hear the "enhancement" in some of the higher notes that I played. I think it's a step in the right direction, but definitely not the final answer. And I have no idea what it would sound like in a band context.

Re: Soulfull Rhodes
I can't help but think that running the EP sounds through a tube preamp would improve the authenticity of the sound. Has anyone here tried that? If so, can you comment and/or perhaps post some audio comparisons? I can't really run out and buy one to experiment on a hunch right now. I still have a second tier, unweighted controller and the Leslie Studio 12 to get at the top of the "honey don't" list...

The Rhodes you're looking for is very similar to this: http://www.norduserforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3993
