Toto - Child's Anthem

Post by TDLemon »

Hey guys!
I always find new great sounds on this board, so I'd like to ask you if anyone could give some ideas for Toto's "Child's Anthem"
.
I think that a grand total of 5 sounds is needed: the piano (of course), the synth brass sound for the piano solo part, the gliding synth at the end of the piano part, some brass sound for the "loud moments" and the "2nd guitar" sound.
Besides the actual sound creation, my main concern is: how can I play all of this stuff? How should I split/layer the keyboard?
My tools are a Nord Stage 2, a MIDI keyboard controlling the Stage (M-Audio Axiom) and, unfortunately, only 2 hands...
Thank you.

I have done a number of patches that require multiple sounds. In some cases, you can use the controllers to Morph between two sounds in the same slot (you might be able to do this with the filter for the brass sounds, for example). In some special cases, I have had to use two programs to get all the splits and layers I needed for a patch, and put them next to each other so I can go back and forth between them with a single button push. This is usually necessary when you need more than an octave or so to cover a particular part. I would recommend you figure out all the sounds necessary and then go to the samples and patches forums and see if any of those are close to the ones you need so you can just download and install them with a minimum of tweaking. I have created a number of patches which contain multiple different splits and layers for different tunes, so you could also check them out to use as examples for your own setups. Programming the Stage 2 is very intuitive, but it can be time-consuming as well, especially if you want the sounds to be a very close match to the song you are performing.

Hope this helps.

A little bit off-topic but how are your experiences on the M-Audio Axiom? Is it recommendable?

Thanks DJ for the advice! I'm also using the "two programs next to each other" trick for other songs, but I really don't like it so much.

@NordFan: yes, it's a good machine. I chose it because it gave me flexibility while being not too expensive (I have the older black model, not the pro neither the new model). The programming is not so easy, despite the Enigma software. The keyboard is good, although it is a little bouncing and "springy". Anyway, I think it depends most on what you need.
