Sound Manager backup error

Post by alexr »

Using Sound Manager 7.32 build 898 on Windows with Stage3 Compact with OS 1.52.

When I click Backup in Sound Manager, I fairly quickly get 2 popup errors:

Nord Sound Manager Error
can't open file 'C:\Users\HP\AppData\Local\TEmp\4909.tmp\Piano\Grand\.entry_1.temp' (error 5: access is denied.)

Operation Failed
Unable to open file 'C:\Users\HP\AppData\Local\TEmp\4909.tmp\Piano\Grand\.entry_1.temp: File error

At this point, it's impossible to backup my synth. Any ideas? Contact Nord?

Thanks for any ideas. Alex

It's failing during "Backing up Piano partition (cached)..."

After the error messages, the message at the bottom of the Sound Manager window says "Backup not completed: Upload failed: Unable to open file C:\Users\HP\AppData\Local\Temp\1A62.tmp\Piano\Grand\.entry_1.temp

I tried running Sound Manager as an Administrator (right-click when and choosing when opening) and also restarting, rebooting.

Weird!

Alex, I have the same issue when I try to backup. I've updated to the latest OS and latest Sound Manager and tried opening the sound manager as an administrator. Did you manage to find out how to resolve this? Thanks.

Re: Sound Manager backup error

I am suddenly running into the same error message while trying to do a complete backup of my NS3 76 keyboard. I say "suddenly" because I was able to do an error-free complete backup just three days ago. The only thing I've done in the past few days is build a couple of programs and loaded several samples. I have NOT done any OS upgrades to the keyboard or the Sound manager.

Just wondering if anyone else has run into this problem and successfully found a solution?

Keyboard is running OS v2.22.
Sound Manager version is v7.52 build 990.

For Sound Manager v7.52:
Received this error: Upload failed: File cache metadata update error!
Also received some details:
File 'C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Temp\B504.tmp\Piano\Upright\.entry_8.temp' couldn't be removed (error 5: Access is denied.)

I also tried with Sound Manager 7.46 and 7.40. In both cases I received the same error, but no details to accompany it.

A real head-scratcher!

Have you tried to manually delete that file/directory (B504.tmp) and/or run NSM as Administrator (right click on it then select the "Run as Administrator" menu item)?

Thanks for the suggestion, maxpiano. Yes, I tried both deleting the temporary file and running NSM as administrator. I even tried deleting the cached version that NSM keeps of that piano, and closing/re-opening NSM. No luck.

But, so that I would be able to sleep tonight, I had to try and figure this out. Unfortunately, I'm not sure this is a universal solution, but it might be. So I'll share it.

Since the error I was receiving was referencing an "Upright Piano" (File 'C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Temp\B504.tmp\Piano\Upright\.entry_8.temp' couldn't be removed (error 5: Access is denied.)), I decided to upload each individual piano sample, using Sound Upload in NSM. When I got to the Amber Upright GrSt 132 Sml 5.3 (I had downloaded this piano from the Nord website > Sound Libraries > Nord Piano Library > Amber Upright after I had performed my last successful backup a few days ago), I received the same cache error message, with a little more detailed information:

Failed to copy the file 'C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Nord Sound Manager\Cache\Data\Amber Upright GrSt 132 Sml 5.3.npno

Final successful solution: I removed only the Amber Upright GrSt 132 Sml 5.3, then tried another full backup. It was successful.

If anybody else has time and inclination, it would be interesting to see if this is a "universal" issue with this file.

Nice work on the sleuthing! I'm not sure what it means, but it would be great if you could send this info directly to Nord Support and see if they can do anything about it:
https://www.nordkeyboards.com/support

I just tried loading the Amber Upright GrSt 132 Sml 5.3 which was not currently on my NS3 and I was able to backup multiple times with no issue, so I don't think it's file specific.

I had an issue with the previous version of NSM not being able to restore a backup to an NS3 that had the new Marimba or Vibraphone installed. The issue has been fixed in the current version of NSM. I was able to backup with no problems. Until the fix, my workaround was to delete the Marimba and Vibraphone samples before restoring. It doesn't look like what's happening in your instance.

Very good and smart job you did

As ajstan suggests, it would be good to report this to Nord Support so that they may investigate the issue.

Re: Sound Manager backup error

I think I've found the root cause of this. And I have to admit I'm a little red-faced  that I didn't see the obvious issue earlier! But it was a good exercise in sleuthing and some discovery, nonetheless.

The source piano file that I had loaded into NSM was marked as "read-only" on my computer. Thus it carried that attribute into the NSM cache (Edit > Preferences > File Cache Preferences > Location).

So when I tried to run a full backup or upload the individual sound, it carried that read-only attribute through to the temporary file. So when NSM was cleaning up temporary files, it could not delete that file ("access is denied"). This is also why running NSM as administrator didn't work.

It would be interesting to know if this is the issue the OP had.

So, this can be filed under "U" for user error (or "D" for DUH!). There was nothing wrong with the piano file on the Nord website or NSM!

(BTW, I set the read-only attribute myself, something that I habitually do to files to prevent inadvertent deletion or changes.)
