Sustained Keys When Released

Postby pianomankd » 28 Jun 2022, 14:00

Hi everyone,

I've had the new Piano 5 for about three months now. Randomly yesterday three notes in the high range are always on sustain and won't release immediately when lifted.

Is this a software issue? Hardware issue? Curious if anyone has had this problem and is a simple fix or if it's something serious. Bummed especially being a new instrument....

Thanks

That's not a hw/sw issue but instead a perfect reproduction of how a real piano behaves... yes because on real pianos, strings have no dampers on higher octaves (usually above F#6), btw this question of yours is not new, discussed many times and if I remember well is also in the FAQ (if not it should be definitely added).

Note: all modern "serious" Digital Piano behave the same.

I play two Steinway grand pianos at my place of work and I promise you, the keys in the higher octaves don't sustain for 15 seconds each when the key is lifted. Thanks though!

If I understood that right: If you have a lot of compressor on that piano sound, it might seem to fade out longer than on an acoustic piano.
Stage 3 Compact (Rev.B 2.1 - OS 2.60) - Kawai VPC1 / Yamaha CP33 - Hall of Fame & NeoVent2 - Behringer Flow-8 - K&M stands 18820+18811 / 18953+18952 - Samsung tablet with MobileSheetsPro & AirTurn Duo200 - QSC K8.2s / Fischer InEars

Sorry, didn't catch you meant such a long sustain and since many new users ask a similar question (not knowing the absence of dampers) I thought it was your case too; if instead the problem it is limited to 3 keys (and always the same 3) it is unlikely to be a software problem, rather a hw one as also Hlaalu suggested.

To double check if that's the case, you may connect the NP5 to a computer ad use a MIDI Monitor app to see if actually the problem is that NoteOff messages for those keys are not generated when you lift them.

Is this with any piano sound within a program?
What if you change programs, does it still happen in all?

I would bet that the 15 seconds of sustain are as long as the normal sustain of that sound while keeping the key pressed. So to me it seems as if there are no note off messages transported from the key sensor to the processor.

In case of an old instrument I’d say dirty contacts. In case of your rather new one it may be some kind of plastic material from the production inside there which doesn‘t belong there. You‘ll probably have to open it or have it serviced.

Good luck. Reporting back after solution would be nice.

Cheers from Germany
