I still don't understand the usage of the five program buttons. How can I store certain preset sounds and also some modified sounds to different program sections so that I can easily access them on stage?

Have you checked page 14 from the user manual of the NP4?

You can imagine them as presets which you can modify without the need to have to save the changes, and that have their own button to recall the program easily.
