Try the TS408s. You can return them like you said. $200 less than CP8s-

I believe they sell the S1 Pros without the battery for $150 less. I haven't heard the CP8s but I think it's personal preference and perceived value between the two.

I have a pair of CP8s and K8.2 - I ended up bying a pair of CP8 because of the fan-cooling in the K8.2.It was a bit annoying over time.
Both the QSCs are good. Even if the K8.2 is a bit better than the CP8 it's only nuances in small spaces.
I've also tried the Bose S1PRO, and I prefer the QSC. The Bose sounds is a bit to processed to my taste.

One thing to consider is the need of using the speakers as a small PA from time to time. The QSCs are more powerful than the Bose in these situations, with more headroom in my opinion.

Last night I did a lot of research into the Alto TS408. Seems like the right choice for me now. Such a low entry price for a pair that people are saying is absolutely the best bank for the buck. And the reduced weight will be nice. (I have to say, the Stage 3 88 moves are killing me!) Really, the Altos are what I can justify for now. There may be some reliability issues but I’ll chance it. I’ll definitely chime in with a review after I use them.

At home I play most of the time over a SONY Stereo plus a pair of good BRAUN speakers. Even the pianos sound really good.

For small venues I have this:

which we use at weddings in the church with voice and keyboard. Pianos sound very good as well, and we don‘t even miss the stereo impression. Easy to carry.

I always appreciate it easy to handle and to carry.

I think it's a good choice. When I also mentioned small monitors earlier, I hadn't registered that you may be playing at different locations, and things like the JBL 305 are a nuisance to transport safely, and as mentioned, you don't want them on the floor, so there's also dealing with the ergonomics of physically setting them up. The Altos will sound best elevated as well, but they can also work in floor monitor position, and are just more rugged overall. And if you want stands, you can get still some short tripod poles which are easy and fast to set up.

If you don't need the internal battery, the CP8 is head and shoulders above the Bose S1 Pro! Plus it is $200 less money. I have both and besides the features the K8.2 sounds the same as the CP8 at low volume except you have to deal with fan noise with the K8.2:(
