Any way to do updates on Linux/Ubuntu?

Postby funked up » 11 Sep 2011, 22:59

Hello to everybody. I'm new to this forum.
I've already done some searching but haven't found anything.

I have a Nord Stage Classic and use Linux for some time now.
I would like to be able to do updates with Ubuntu and not with Windows or Mac.
Also I'd like to be able to use the Nord Manager with Ubuntu.

Anyone have an idea? I 'd like to avoid "Wine" (don't even know if that works).
My other question is if clavia can do anything about that officially. Why MUST I use windows or Mac??

Thanx,
George

The short answer is because Linux is not a major player in the audio world, though some of us (and some on here - myself, Hanon, etc.) use it with success, it's just not a mainstream OS yet. So, no real incentive for Nord to develop its software to work on it.

That being said it may be possible to get something like Wine to do it, if enough of us bother Nord they may develop something for Linux, but other than that, it's a Windows (and MAC) world, unfortunately. :)

If anything, you should try WINE first. Trust me, it works with simple programs. Although I am not entirely sure if it will work with the drivers and what not.

If WINE fails to work and you do not want to make a Windows partition, you should at least use a virtual machine. If you do not have windows available then I guess the only thing left is to get anyone you may possibly know to lend you their windows laptop for a day.

As bdodds said, Linux is NOT a mainstream world. I love Linux and Debian, but I got to admit that for audio, there are more stuff on windows. Not to mention that Jack has given me headaches and wont record. I even got a windows partition dedicated to audio and offline gaming, I mainly use REAPER (which I totally recommend).

Welcome to the forum George!
This is sound advice from members: bdodds, and Gustavo.
The only thing that I could possibly add is: that because there are so many different distributions of Linux, software developers have difficulty knowing which one to support "although Ubuntu is in the majority these days".
The software team, or third party vendors of Clavia already have some work to do as a result of Apple's OSX Lion, I doubt they're going to develop a Linux friendly version of their apps in the near future.

Cheers, Hanon

I would value having some decisive information on whether or not the Nord apps work under WINE.
Not enough to do it myself, as I don't run Ubuntu, but mainly use BT4, H3E, and FreeBSD distros for Forensic data retrieval, and network security analysis.

I would say that there is the strongest of possibilities that the Nord apps will work fine in Ubuntu under WINE.
I look forward to one of you posting your results

Hi,
I don't know if it will work, but there is a thing called "Mini XP", it's like the linux cd that you can boot with it, run the OS in the memory and work with it, but as the name says, it's a windows XP lite version.
What I don't know is if you can install the Nord software in that.
Maybe you can give it a try.

Thanx a lot guys for all the replies. I'm not totally without windows. I have a laptop that has both Windows and Ubuntu installed.
It's just that since I've tried Ubuntu (about a year ago) I almost never used windows again. I hate to wait almost 5 minutes for vista to load compared to the 30 seconds of Ubuntu.

But since Linux/Ubuntu is an open source and as far as I know very simple for programmers to work on it,
how much time would a "Geek" working for Nord need to do a simple programm for those of us using Linux?

Don't get me wrong. It's not even a request, It's just a wish.
Thanx again guys!

An app written specifically for Ubuntu Natty Narwhal isn't likely to work the same, or at all in OpenSUSE, or Solaris, or possibly not even an earlier distro of Ubuntu like Gutsy Gibbon, Feisty Skipjack, or Mint.

From the perspective of a geek, it's impossible to cover all of the permutations of the top 10 Linux distros, even if you did, how long would you be covered with new open source versions being released on an almost daily basis?

WINE should be the solution that you're looking for.
Here's a great tutorial on how to set it up:

Cheers, Hanon

In theory if they developed in Java they could write one version for every OS, but we know how well that translates to the real world. In the worst case Java would level the Linux playing field but Java apps tend to be a little more clunky and you're constrained by existing libraries - the functionality is probably all there but it would mean re-writing their app from scratch.

I'm interested in at least trying it, so maybe I'll give it a shot under WIne.. I was thinking the virtual machine idea is a viable one, so there's always that if you don't want to boot all the way back into Windows just to run the app..
