EPiano sounds

Postby bootch » 26 May 2014, 14:08

Hi Nord Pianists :)

May be this is a stupid question, so sorry for that. I love the piano sounds in my NP2HP, however, I am not so excited about EP sounds. It seems to me a bit "cheap" and very huge in low frequencies. Especially if you play using a bit of damper pedal the sound soon becomes a huge base glut. Of course it can be fixed by cutting low frequencies on EQ, but I feel the sounds lose their natural expression then...

What do you guys think?

Hi,
It can be tricky to get a desired sound, and settings depend on general acoustic conditions (loudspeakers, room), but I think our keyboard panels are well equipped and, in fact, primarily designed to do that, live & quick.

I agree on them being huge on the bass and thin on the higher register. Yet I have found the new Wurly 2 to be more even and has better dynamics. My only gripe is that it doesn't have that classic Rhodes sound, but it does have that classic Wurly sound :P

Huge in low frequencies, with glut while pedaling is exactly the way my '79 suitcase Rhodes sounded.

Agreed, but sometimes you seek something that tends to sound less glutty and bassy! For that I think Wurlies are perfect.

Well, but Wurli has complete different timbre and dynamic behaviour, rather than changing EP type I would try and correct the sound using the EQ if the "dry" Nord Rhodes EPs don't fit my taste
(but usually I am lucky, they do fit it as I want them to sound as a real Rhodes :D I use EQ only in conjuntion with Amp Sim&Drive)

To tell the truth, so far my favorite dynamic behaviour is the Wurly 2 so I guess I am kind biased. It surely has a different timbre than a Rhodes and does not work as well for sustaining sound (for such cases the EP1). While I do prefer the overal Rhodes sound, in my case it always end ups mudding the mix... well not really the mix, but how we hear it in my small practice room.

By the way Maxpiano, which EP sample do you prefer?

I think Wurlies are perfect, you should go for it. Sometimes you seek something that tends to sound less glutty and bassy, in that case Wurlies would be perfect.

I don't really have a preference, I use the one that fits better each the song,
EP1 Low Deep is probably the most versatile, it fits mainly soft/ballad style pieces, but not only, thanks to its timbre change and nice "bark" in the high velocity range
If I don't want the "bell" when playing low velocity I use EP2 or EP4 Close ideal, but for example if I look for George Duke sound I go for EP3 Shallow etc,...
(and of course, I use the Wurli too with the same concept: when it fits the song ;) )

Thank you all for your comments and opinions. There is probably no way to get more EP sounds into NP2HP apart from those 7 EPs and 2 Wurlies available in the sound library, am I right?
