Drawbar setting for Boston's Foreplay intro
I'd like to get the forum's help with the drawbar setting for a tune that I've been playing "wrong" for the last 30 years.
It's Boston's Foreplay from the first album.

I've been playing this with the bottom 3 drawbars out, but it just never seemed quite right.
Lately, I think I hear some 4th and 8th in there.
Anyone have a great setting for this?

Re: Drawbar setting for Boston's Foreplay intro
Great Organ Prog song!
Regarding the drawbars, for Foreplay, I think indeed there is some "high" freqs, IMHO even without the FUND. My best guess would be
for the Intro/"Theme"/top octaves: 760000004 sounds pretty close to me!
For the low end, maybe a split setup, with some bottom like: 777000000??

I think your patch is closer than what I had going on.
I recorded a quick demo sequence so that I could try out some different settings.
"I just left the timing issues and bad notes".
Cheers, Hanon

Indeed not too far away. Actually, IIRC they used mainly a M3 (at least I read it somewhere), and maybe lowering the keyclick noise setting might get even closer?
BTW, great playing, actually!! But why ending on the V7??! Aaarrrgh, makes me want to run to the Piano to go back to the root! ;-)

I have the click on "Normal" I'll try it again on low.Johannes wrote:Indeed not too far away. Actually, IIRC they used mainly a M3 (at least I read it somewhere), and maybe lowering the keyclick noise setting might get even closer?

In keeping with the M theory, I'll switch the Hammond model to Clean.
I went back and listened, you're right, I think I'm supposed to drop out that 7th note after the mordant, and end on a 3rd inversion C chord.
I've watched a couple of YouTube tutorials on how to play it, a couple of them were closer than me.
I've tried to tweak this thing so many times over years. I'm sure I've got some bad chords and runs in there.
I've got a couple spots where I tried put some of my own influence in too "like the sus7 chord"
Cheers, Hanon
{edit} I lowered the click to low, changed the model to clean, and modified the drawbar reg to 686004002
I'm still not 100% satisfied with the DB setting, maybe cut the fundamental by half?

OMG I am in awe! I always thought Tom Scholz must have been superhuman or something to play like that (and especially the Hammond solo on Smokin' - my all time #1 organ solo). And now Hanon plays it note for note like it was nuthin at all'. Ok I'm a guitar player who just recently switched to keys but honestly Hanon you really rock.
For laughs check out this youtube - the guy may not have the exact drawbars settings but hey, he does it all!!!!

The kid in the video is great. When I was his age, I wished I could play half as good as he does.
I guess that's the difference that talent makes.
Tom Scholz is an awesome musician. I've often wondered what it took to create the piece of music that has taken me 30+ years to be able to play.
I love the solo to smokin'. The notes aren't the hard part, the hard part is the feel and the timing.
Cheers, Hanon

Every time I catch myself wanting to play angry birds, plants verses zombies, or black ops. I force myself to play through about 30 of the Hanon exercises first.
Cheers, Hanon
