Fine tuning samples

Post by muikq »

Hi,

my first post to the forum, the best forum I've ever seen.

I'm upgrading from NS classic to NS2, and as I'm new to the sample synth, I wanted to check if the fine tuning also affects the samples?

I'm going to sample some ethnic instruments (smaller kantele) just to practise sampling and for live use in a band. The instrument is usually tuned at 442Hz because we've got other instruments which are permanently tuned so. But if I'm going to sample the instrument and use them with NS2, which is also tuned to 442Hz, I'm supposing I should do the sampling process with kantele tuned to 440Hz?

Just wanted to make sure as I don't have the NS2 yet (sold the NS), and it's going straight to a gig when it comes next month, maybe with the samples I'm recording. I'm waiting it more than christmas this year.

Thanks!
Veikko

Yes, you should sample the kantele tuned to 440 Hz, then you can use the master tune on your Stage to tune it to 442 Hz.

I'm not sure how quickly I'd jump to that conclusion. There are valid points for going either way. If, for example, you wanted to layer other instruments in together with the kantele, you might want to do it that way. But if, for example, you would be playing one song in a set with the kantele and the rest without you could avoid having to adjust System Menu Fine Tune up to 442 and then back down again to 440 by tuning that sample prior to insertion into Nord Sample Editor and creation of the .nsmp file.

Bless,

Pablo

PS -- and yes, welcome!

Good point! 99% of my gigs and bands play in 442Hz because of my beloved accordion (not red though) is always with me. So my master tuning is 442 almost without exception.

And i could do the fine tuning in daw afterwards if needed. If anybody hears the difference in the context. One guitar player said he could feel the 2Hz difference in his fingers... :D

Thanks for the tips!

It's an iPhone app which makes reading the forum a bit easier on a small screen but apparently lacks some nice features designed in original forum.

So you're tapping keys, I'm swiping glass... My former teacher in music technology had a good point in using touchscreen equipment in music: "you can't twist touchscreen knobs, it's the only thing that separates us from monkeys!" That's one thing I love about nord, twisting knobs which actually do something.

Poking glass... I wish somebody invented a touchscreen for loading a gig van!

Hm... but if the whole band tunes to 442, then you should have the instrument sampled, retune the samples to 440 and the bring it to 442 from the menu. Just my opinion...
