Dialing in an AP with "balls"
Hey players,
I realize we've been beating that old "Nord acoustic piano sounds" horse to death over the years, but I've a specific question.
Have any of you been able to dial in a close approximation to either the Kurz PC3 or Yamaha Motif/S90 acoustic piano sounds? I've got a Motif XS rack and a Kurz Micro-Piano that I've been A/Bing with my Nord and trying to get the EQ right.
I realize AP sounds are a matter of taste, and so on. And I do like the recent Nord APs (Lady D is my favorite). But there's something about the Yammy piano that I can only describe as "it's got balls"... and so far I haven't been able to get that sound out of my Nord.
You?
Thanks for any tips.

Re: Dialing in an AP with "balls"
It would be awesome (and funny) if Clavia would shut us up with a new sample based on that Yammy S90 sound and called it the Ballsy Grand.

Re: Dialing in an AP with "balls"
wow!
now you have me curious... where did you find this "Ballsy Grand"? on the S90 classic or the ES? or maybe on the XS? and what was the name of that patch (voice)?
i used to own a S90 back in the days and the only piano i could stand (from a "ballsy" perspective) was a 3rd part made piano patch, which i bought from a web site. :-)

Could you direct us to a piano sound demo on the internet somewhere that has these balls that you speak of?
I respect your opinion, I don't agree, but still respect it.
I've owned the Yamaha Motif ES8, It was my main piano sound for many years before Nord came out with the Stage instruments.
I still have a Motif-Rack, it's a great box of sounds, sadly no balls-grand though :(
Back when my music career wasn't providing enough income to support a wife and two daughters "ahh who am I kidding, it never provided enough income"
My day job was as a piano teacher and piano tuner. I'd like to think the experience has given me a pretty good ear for acoustic pianos.
I think that if you could just point me to a demo of your balls-grand, that I could certainly recommend some sample choices and EQ settings
to get you in the ballpark.
Cheers, Hanon

Re: Dialing in an AP with "balls"
yeah, this was the situation for me as well. the Motif was for me the "winner" of the "big-3" rompler workstations at the time. but i know the Korg Triton classic (and even the Triton Extreme) was very popular in heavy rock bands. the acoustic pianos didn't sound anything like the real thing. they sounded synthetic, but they had "crisp" and brightness and cut through the mix very well.Hanon_CTS wrote:I've owned the Yamaha Motif ES8, It was my main piano sound for many years before Nord came out with the Stage instruments.

Re: Dialing in an AP with "balls"
By "ballsy grand" I mean the piano in the first bank of patches of the Motif. I'll try to play with it some more this week and hopefully will post a recording that A/B/C's the Nord, Motif and Kurz pianos.

That's exactly how my old P200 sounds. And the Bright Grand doesn't do it for me either entirely. It's VERY different (in a bad way sadly, live that is).Randelph wrote:The new Bright Grand in the Nord library doesn't do it for you?

Dialing in an AP with
Are you using a proper amplification system? The Nord pianos don't forgive mediocre amps. I use a pair of FBT active speakers and I love the Bright Grand a lot! It cut's thru in the band mix easily. For me the NS2 delivers the very best piano sound I ever had on stage. Way better than the hollow sounding Grand from my Motif ES I had previously.
