Setting up EQ on NE3 for clearer pianos ...

Post by denistu »

Hi everybody,

I own a NE3 and love the keyboard but I am a bit disappointed with the clarity of EP and Acoustic pianos on this board, when comparing to Yamaha, Korg or Roland. Even when playing through my, relatively "flat" headphones (ATH-M40fs) the sound of pianos is bit "muddy", lacking clearance. It's almost like the sound is bit "too fat", and requires some EQ adjustment.

I tried to lower the bass but then I loose the thickness in the middle or high range. I assume some adjustment of middles would help, but so far I wasn't able to find the right EQ setting. I also noticed that when I play very light, barely putting any pressure on the keys, the situation is better and the sound is clearer but as soon as I start playing regularly, the sound becomes "too fat" and muddy.

I was wondering if anybody else noticed the same thing and if there is a recommended EQ setting (on the NE3 itself) that might clear the sound.

Thank you,
Denis

I don't know if this'll work for you but here goes, depending on the sample I like to set the Oregan and the PiaNO the same so I can use them in the same slot. I like the fazoli piano and usually set the Treble EQ around 9 pm and set the Mids around 800 Hz and cut a little, Bass Eq is usually close to flat,

The different piano sounds vary a lot in terms of required EQ in amplified contexts. If you want brilliance and clarity, try the new Silver Grand or the Bright Grand.

For playing through headphones, though, it may be an issue of your phones as well, or even of your listening expectations. With my AKG 240 MkII's, and comparing to my acoustic grand, I never find I have to cut the mids. Rather, I have to boost presence (high mids, 1-2kHz) somewhat to get closer to the real thing. But as I said, this may be more a problem of my phones than of the Nord sounds.

Thanks for the tips guys.
As for the headphones, I don't think that they are the problem in this case, as I use the same set to listen pianos on my other keys. For example each piano on my Yamaha S70Xs is crystal clear when using the same headphones. Also, the "muddiness" is present when I play the NE through different PAs as well. So, I think it more about the default settings on the board, or maybe the way the sound was sampled...
