Radial JDI Duplex

Post by mtier0067 »

Wondering if I can use the Radial JDI Duplex with my stage 2 and ventilator to get to a single l/r stereo signal from LR of stage + LR of Vent to FOH & to my stage amp with one box. Does anyone know that Radial product well? I can't seem to figure out if that's possible using the rca jacks to go to the amp and the xlrs to FOH.

Thanks!

Do you mean that the output of the Stage goes to the Ventilator and then the output of the Ventilator goes to the Duplex, or are you trying to mix the outputs of the Ventilator and the Stage with the Duplex? (This would presume that you're running another keyboard into the Ventilator).

Hi,
Radial is one of the best DI/little box to solve any connection problems in the industry. they are made in Canada in BC and are very good. Yes, with any of their DI and especially the duplex, you have two stereo outputs, then, one could fill your stage amp for monitoring and the other one the PA, you even have a ground lift to remove any buzz or ground loop....
Buy it with no issue.

I think you're not understanding his question. He has a stereo output from the Stage (for all the non-organ sounds). He also has a stereo output from the Ventilator (the organ sound sent via Output 3 of the Stage). His question is, Can he use the JDI as a sort of line mixer to reunite the stereo signals of the Stage and the Vent. I don't know the answer but hopefully I've clarified the question.

It seems you can. See

I wonder if you lose the monitoring THRU from the RCA side. It says RCA parallel with the 1/4" inputs:

Perhaps emailing them to find out would be best.

If that's that he wants to do, then yes. The Duplex is specifically designed to allow that. Page 6 of the manual shows that you can plug 2 stereo line level sources into the RCA inputs, mix them in stereo to send to FOH, and take one or two passthrus from the jack thru outputs for onstage monitoring. You can also do the same using the jack inputs and thrus, but strangely the manual does not specifically show whether you can then use the RCA thrus for onstage monitoring.

It would be interesting to know if the THRU is lost in the RCA connectors when connecting 2 stereo kbds. If you find out, please let us know.

Hi,

I have (and like!) the Radial JDI Duplex (v5) and agree with previous comments about thatit's a nice toy.

Now with respect to playing two stereo keyboards through it as it was said, it is possible. Also the precise routing needs are important, and not everything is 100% clear from the small leaflet that comes with it. SO I did some testing and the interesting results I found were
1) The THRU jack plug echoes a sum of the jack input of the channel PLUS the signal at both RCA plugs (if the MERGE option is active, only one RCA plug is still audible)
2) The THRU option only works for the 1/4 inch jack plugs, not the RCA ones.
3) The RCA stero plugs are merged into mono before the final output

That being said, connecting two stereo sources while having a line back to stage monitoring could work this way:
Connect one keyboard to the two jack inputs, the second one to one RCA plug of each channel (a bit weird cable but so what).
Then you will have BOTH keyboards' signal on the THRU connectors for monitoring.
You could even add a third setero input pair to the free two RCA plugs which will also appear at the THRU connector.

Alternatively you can use the MERGE button and have both boards connected via the stereo quarter inch plugs, but then no more monitoring directly from the JDI.
Still not sure how you have the Ventilator places in your setup. If its just daisy-chained with one of the boards you should be fine.
In any case, if you use the THRU plugs, always ALL inputs of one channel appear on it.

I have used this particular variant of their product line:

http://www.radialeng.com/pdfs/manual-duplex-mk4.pdf

For several years fo passive stereo summing / mixing" with quieter results than any of the 5 small format mixers I own.

I connect in the following manner:

Nord Stage 2 Left > Left 1/4" Jack on JDI
Nord Stage 2 Right > Right 1/4" Jack on JDI
Nord G2X Left > Left 1/4" Jack on JDI
Nord G2X Right > Right 1/4" Jack on JDI
Nord Lead A1R Left > Left RCA Jack on JDI
Nord Lead A1R Right > Right RCA Jack on JDI
Remaining Left / Right RCA Jacks Are Used as THRU to (2) EV ZLX-12P Monitors
XLRs on the Rear Panel > Left and Right to House System

I "mix" my rig from the master knobs on the instruments levels set to 12:00 (straight up) and roll up for featured parts / solo sections.

The House guy always asks if my levels are consistent because the gain level he sees initially for sound check are lower than the usual "max the knob" approach...but once I give him both "rhythm and lead" the gains are adjusted for headroom and there have been no problems. Quite often the house mixer comments on the lack of buzz / hiss coming from my rig.

One other point...when the house is in MONO...I only connect the RIGHT channels and do not use the "SUM" button to avoid phase cancellation.

This approach is not for everybody...but I have been using this approach for several years and I like the clean sound of summing thru Jensen transformers over what I get out of portable mixers.
