Suddenly no sound Stage EX Compact

I have a problem with my stage ex compact in that i could be playing a gig/rehearsal and all of a sudden the keyboard stops outputing any sound piano/organ/synth. Its a very random fault (i.e. Hardest to diagonose) its happened 7 or 8 times in the last couple of months. Ive lost confidence in the instrument and gonna use my spare yamaha motif till i can find the fault.

Its just happened on a gig last night mid solo. It was a quartet gig and the audience were proper listeners. Luciky the venue has an upright on stage i was able to switch to but its the worse feeling being a musician and your gear failing.

This problem has been persisting over the last couple of months and i've been left on stage with a keyboard that has no sound coming out.

I thought it could be my amp (i use QSC K10s), Ive got planet waves cables with the little spring so they never fall out, which i know can be a problem when using the K10s as floor wedges. The amp light stays on and ive had other stuff plugged into the second input which has worked fine. Its definately got to be the Nord.

Ive tried using the other outputs 3 & 4 and its still the same. Also only have sustain pedal plugged in, no volume pedals as i know this can be an issue on electros.

Ideally i'd try and video it but its so random i could be there all day waiting and it be fine. I'm gonna set it up in my studio and leave it on all day to see if i can capture the moment.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what to try as i need to get it fixed ASAP, have 20+ gigs this month. Its around 4-5yrs old so well out of warranty. If anyone from nord could help this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Martin

Hi Martin,

Where are you located? Have you had a chance to check the headphone outs to see whether they behave the same way? Either way, it would be useful to know. If headphones continue to work when main outs 1-4 do not, this would point the tech in a specific direction. If not, a different direction. Also, when this occurs does the entire front panel look perfectly normal, or is there other strangeness going on?

Do you have any pedals connected to the instrument? A wiggy cc pedal might cause something like that in certain circumstances.

Bless,

Pablo

Im in Leeds UK, im pretty familiar with nords as i used to sell them. Never heard of the fault before when in tech support. All the outputs including the headphone stop working. The panel looks normal, no strange lights. No pedals are connected bar the sustain pedal. I have used a volume pedal before in the control socket but not used it for a while.

I have gotten emergency phone calls from panicked musicians at gig sound checks with the same problem -- disconnect the sustain pedal and problem is gone. You might try that. One eventually gets to the age where granny glasses must be in place before connecting sustain pedal (I can say this because I am past that age). When connected to the control pedal circuit by mistake, the Nord's brains will respond accordingly and no audio output will be produced.

I'm hoping that's it....if not, she'll need to go see the Nord doc!

Pablo

This happened to me for the first time last night and terrified me! It was my old Stage Classic 88, finished Don't Stop Believin', no problems; start the encore and there's no sound! I look to the sound guy and he signals that he hasn't touched anything, I unplug the control pedal, still nothing. Turned the keyboard off and back on (audible pop/angry sound guy) still nothing. Checked cables after and could get no sound out of any outputs (including headphones) on the keyboard. Packed up and went home, this morning I plugged in the old girl and she's making sound! Very relieved, but I'd love to figure out what caused this so I can make sure it doesn't happen again. I did not remove the sustain pedal (but I will if it happens again).

Running v5.06

tech will have a tough time diagnosing a problem which cannot be replicated -- hopefully it will fail again soon.

Please feel free to contact me at work.

Mine had a failure on Outputs 1&2 only. The Output module was repaired under warranty (fortunately)

Maybe I should check the output of all my channels before warranty runs out. Currently only use 1 and 2
