"Childsafe" monitors suitable for home use
Currently I use two Yamaha MSP5A monitors which sit on some quiklok speaker stands. Audio wise, they are great, but they are very top heavy and I am paranoid of my boy pulling them down on himself. I'd like to find some kind of floorstanding, stable solution that is unlikely to fall over, but that retains as much quality as possible. I used to have a Roland Keyboard Amp and didn't rate it at all. Googling around I have seen people with QSC K10s resting on the floor under their keyboard, but that's for stage use, it looks like they have a K8 as well that can sit like that but at 1000W it still sounds a little extreme to have two of those in my living room, and if they are that powerful they probably have a fair amount of hiss etc. too. Is there a smaller "under keyboard" solution? Would a hifi amp and floorstanding speakers work as well as a studio monitor?

Re: "Childsafe" monitors suitable for home use
From experience, hifi speakers will attract little hands who will pull off the fronts and start prodding the speakers, so I keep all that on high shelves. My Yamaha PAS 300s have proved robust and live tucked away at floor level in a corner of the living room, although it is necessary to check the settings of the mixer on the rear as that also attracts little hands. When angled on their internal wedges it is largely inaccessible, and they are much smaller than the K10s, which incidentally I've never noticed excessive hiss from when set to lower volumes. They're also nice and cheap. On the other hand you would be well advised to try before you buy, as PA solutions may not hold up as well to critical listening as your studio monitors. There is a small fan that is always on. It doesn't bother me when set up as you propose, but everyone is different.

Re: "Childsafe" monitors suitable for home use
I have yet to find studio monitors with a Bose style with very small speakers and huge sound. You could try to get some regular high end computer speakers, they could do the job. Personally I like Bose stuff.
I would not recommend getting a PA or something for live use as those tend to be much louder than you'd need for a studio, plus not all of them sound as good as studio monitors since they may sacrifice a some quality in exchange for ruggedness.
Another very efficient (in space and money) solution is to buy the best possible headset. To increase your mobility you could just get an audio cable extension. That way you could have a less dangerous place for your kid and a happier wife!
