My first nord lead: the 4r

Post by SB-SIX »

Hi,

I've picked up a nl4r and i really love it. I used analog gear mainly but this is really something. Its such great fun to have everything in front of you and tweak like crazy. I already made a whole bunch of patches from scratch that i really like. The most genius feature of all is that chord memory is stored with the patch. This makes housey/garagey sounds a breeze. And the fm produces some insane sounds. Love it! Cant wait to use it in my live sets. Will post something on youtube soon...

Cheers!

Hi SB-SIX,

Welcome to the forum, and Congratulations on your new NL4 Rack Synth.

As you have discovered the NL4 Rack is a great VA Synth. I have the NL 4 Rack as well, I'm Loving it so far, and looking forward to some additional features to be added via an OS update in the near future.

Cheers,
Muziksculp

And.. Porting some of the effects from the new NL1A to the NL4 would be very cool.

I would also love to see the Percussion Track mode that was in the NL2X made available in the NL4. (but I doubt this will happen).

Cheers,

Wow that's a very small list of wishes, Clavia has done a great job then! The list of wishes for DSI products is usually wayyy larger :)

Oh there's a few more requests floating out there for sure. :)
A few if mine are:
1) Allowing morph wheel to only affect the currently active slot. As a four part multitimbral synth, having the only available control wheel affect every active a lot is just unforgivable for me. Especially for live use.

2) delay style to be save individually with each patch.

3) the biggest one for me is knob behavior. The values jump to the current knob position and is horrible frustrating when playing live. I'm dying to see a pass through mode added wherein the value don't change until the knob passes by the currently assign value. The current behavior is practically useless live as values just snap to wherever the knob is and make live editing gracefully basically impossible.

4) Latching Morph buttons (without secondary morph hold). Press once to engage. Press second time to disengage.

5) Adjustable transition time between morphs with morph buttons. Current behavior just "jumps" to new morph changes.

I totally agree with the requests you have chvad. Especially with point 1 and 3.

My current approach, concerning the current knob behavior for live use, is holding down the morph wheel button and turn the knob you want to affect until the green light goes off, then you know you are on the starting position. This is however no ideal solution to the main problem, more like a last resort solution, as you reset the morph wheel settings by doing so. I can’t wait for Clavia to fix these problems.

That's an interesting work around. Clever. Def not ideal like you said but commendable! If I had to big 2 I'd agree that 1 and 3 would be the most important for sure. Glad im not alone! :) Here's to hoping for an update to address those!

I am beyond satisfied with my NL4, it’s a dream-synth as is. Really, it’s a prized-possession. But, yeah (Number 3) knob pickup would be a huge improvement. I remember wishing for that in 1984 after I bought my Prophet 600.

I’m doubtful that the much-speculated-about “I cannot make any promises” features will include any (shift-talk) NLA1 effects.

However, the OCS 1 control panel section could easily have more functionality programmed into it to include A1 waveforms, and, perhaps….user waveforms? (Now I’m dreaming…)
