Splits with MIDI control local OFF

Post by Tony J Tallarico »

I keep the MIDI control local in the off position on my Stage EX because it is part of a larger rig that requires the keyboard to act as a controller as well as its internal sounds be triggered by a second keyboard. I notice that I am unable to program splits on the Stage EX with it set up as such. When I place the MIDI local in on position ... of course the splits are programmable ... but I am triggering notes twice (because the keyboard is essentially being MIDI'd to itself - again due to my overall rig). So am I correct to believe that splits on the Stage EX are not being sent via MIDI? Odd, because Korg and Roland keyboards do transmit this info. Is there a work-around or am I missing an obvious solution? thanks

Hi Tony,

Having your Nord set to 2-way or 3-way splits will have no effect on outgoing midi transmission. AFAIK only very specialized keyboards will offer the ability to split things up into zones and e.g. transmit different zones on different midi channels (Lync anyone?), but perhaps I'm behind the times on current offerings of other makers.

Without some detail about your overall rig, it's not really possible to offer advice on your question... There is probably a solution to be found in the Midi and/or External Menu. Generically speaking, it is usually best to use the External Section for driving external devices and leave Local set to On. That way you can map your external devices into the same zone split structure as the Nord's internal voices.

You can feel free to call me at work.

Bless,

Actually there is a way to use the NS as a master with a 2-zone split and transmit on two different channels: use the External Sections of Panel A & B, assigning each Ext. section to one of the keyboard zones and set to a different Midi CH.

Both Panels must be active of course and to fulfill the rest of your needs: MIDI LOCAL ON, all other sound sections of NS configured to respond to individual Midi channels (in A/B Midi Settings) and only to external Midi (= active with Zone leds switched off)
