Setting MIDI CC Values on NP2

Post by rjackson87 »

Hi there!

I'm trying to set up the front panel of my NP2 to be usable as a control surface (into Mainstage2).

Is there any way it's possible to change what Values the CC's output (i.e. 'Effect 1 Type', CC 60, but outputs values which cycle through 0, 19, 37, 55, 73, 91, 109 and 127)? I was hoping to even be able to set it as outputting 0 and 127 so I could use it as a toggle.

I'm also trying to avoid turning Local Control Off as, as far as I've tried, it won't output the Piano sounds from the NP2.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Rich

Unfortunately you can't change that. Still, you might be able to insert a program between the incoming MIDI message on your Mac and MainStage. I've never tested it on a Mac, but perhaps a program MidiPipe could help you to get this working. For example, if you could change value 63 (and below) for CC 60 to value 0 and 64 (and above) to value 127, you'd have your toggle.

If you turn Local Control off, you're essentially splitting your NP2 in two separate parts. The keyboard and front panel then only send out MIDI out the MIDI (or USB) port, while normally (Local Control on) a copy of these MIDI messages would be sent directly to the Nord's 'sound engine', regardless of what the MIDI settings are. If Local Control is off, the sound engine will still play sounds, but it will only react to MIDI messages coming in on (the configured) MIDI channel (either the MIDI port or USB).

To get optimal results when using a Nord in combination with a DAW (like Logic or Ableton) or a program like MainStage, you would configure that software to 'echo' incoming MIDI messages back to the Nord. Or more specifically, you'd set up MainStage so that the front panel (and the keyboard) controls MainStage, while MainStage itself controls the sound engine in the Nord. For example, you could send data from a MIDI file to the Nord's sound engine to play some piano sounds, while you play an organ simulation in MainStage via the Nord's keyboard at the same time.

I hope this makes sense. I've posted some information on configuring Logic with a Stage in the Stage section of the forum; that information should be partially applicable to MainStage.

Feel free to ask for clarifications if I'm not making any sense.

Thanks for that!

Sorry if you've already posted about this, but could I just check what I'd send INTO the NP2 to get it to play the piano sounds?

Really appreciate the advice so far, thank you!

Midipipe will let you change control values from the Nord to the DAW. For example, I use the Nord soft pedal to toggle the EVB3 rotor by intercepting the CC and changing it.

I haven't tried doing that in particular, but if you upgrade to Mainstage3
you can try with the built-in midi plugins named "Modifier" and "Scripter" that comes with Mainstage 3 and Logic Pro X.
Modifier MIDI plug-in
The Modifier MIDI plug-in lets you quickly reassign or filter a single continuous controller (CC).
