Use as keyboard for Logic 9 pro?

Post by vildbas »

Hi!

I want to use my Nord Stage EX 88 as a simple keyboard when writing music in Logic 9. Thought it was plug'n'play, but no... :)

- I've connected with midi/usb cable

- I've started a virtual instrument in Logic

- Sometimes I get sound, but the tones only play when I'm releasing the key, and sometimes both when press+release. Really annoying ;)

- After a while, my midi/usb-cable gives a yellow error light and it seems like the connections is lost (no sound when playing on keyboard)

Please help. I haven't touched the midi settings on the nord (have no clue of how to use it), but I'm guessing there's the problem. I'm kind of a MIDI noob so please give me step by step...

Your "MIDI-USB-Cable" is a MIDI Interface in fact. You will have to install the proper drivers for your current version of Mac OS X. It might also be that the "Cable" you use does not work properly with Mac OS X at all.

Also make sure that you have installed the latest update of your Mac OS.

If you cannot find appropriate drivers for your "MIDI-Cable", consider investing in a proper MIDI-Interface like this one:

Thanks for the reply!

I didn't get any drivers when I bought it. On the homepage it says just plug and play and compatible with both win and MAc OS X

http://www.tvspelsweb.se/midi-usbkabel-p-2217.html

I get sound first, but after a while not...

Once again my advice: return the product and buy a proper MIDI interface. The M-Audio products are very reliable for example. If your Nord Stage is set to the default MIDI settings, it is very, very unlikely that your Nord Stage is the problem.

Hi again!

You don't happen to know any interfaces that are "all in one" (just one piece). Now I'll have to have USB->interface->2midi cables.

My wife'll be mad for all apparatuses laying around in the appartement! :O

There are many, e.g. M-AUdio as recommended:
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Uno.html

or
http://www.thomann.de/de/swissonic_midiusb_1x1.htm

or
http://www.roland.com/products/en/UM-1EX/

Cheap and reliable (at least the one ROLAND I have)

This one doesn't seem reliable (checked forums) on mac/logic, but I will look into the roland and m-audio. Are you using nord/logic Pro with your Roland gear?

Ok, just got my M-audio midisport Uno. Works 100% to my macbook and logic 9 pro. Only 399SEK (42 Euro)

Now I can continue composing for the game.

Thanks for the tip!
