Which grand piano is the best?

Post by azwel »

I have the 3 grands in my library..i wouldnt mind erasing all 3 if someone could direct me to the best "LRG" file on http://www.nordkeyboards.com/main.asp?t ... rand_Piano

so far my favorite out of the 3 on my nord is #1: studio grand 2 yaC7

When I play the samples, they all kind of blend into one. its hard to pick. What is your favorite?
Also, Is 'LRG' nesessarily BETTER than say, 'SML' or does it just sound bigger etc

I like the Fazoli sample & prefer to load just one acoustic piano at a time. I believe the Larger samples don't necessarily sound that much better. There have been decent explanations with the differences n this forum.

The "best" piano is going to based on you. What kind of music do you play? Rock, pop, jazz, worship, blues, R&B use different types of pianos. Do you play solo, with a quiet combo, a loud band, big band, orchestra? Your context will drive the decision as well. What kind of environment do you normally play in? Big booming halls, loud bars, churches, etc. all have different acoustic impact. Are you recording, playing live or both?

If you don't play solo or in a small quiet group, I find that that the subtle differences between LRG and MED pianos are pretty much lost.

And don't overlook the uprights; a few of them have amazing character.

True. All i use is the studio grand 2 yac7..and then the upright. I like the upright actually.
The difference between piano 1 and 2 is just so small. Same with most the other grands..

Anyone use the XL? I wouldnt because I need other files in the library too. But it sounds cool.
One other question. If have a version 5.1 file....should i delete it and download 5.3? Does it really make a difference, do you think they really updated it much more from 5.1 to 5.3

I use the xl faz and the L Bösendorf. I would use the xl bösen if I had the memeory for it...plus one uprght (just now the Schimmel) and the honky tonk...again, would like ot have more memory....yes, the xl's sound better, richer, more complex, less stretched in the higher and lower registers

I believe the 5.3 versions of the piano samples support long release and string resonance. On an E3 61 or 73, long release is not supported, but you may find some value in the added dimension of the string resonance. It's a subtle effect, and I had some trouble with it at first due to the way I pedaled.

I'm now using Bright Grand Lg and Black Upright Md. The Bright Grand does cut through the mix of the band best. I really like the sound of the Black Upright and it even sounds good mono. I don't use it with the band much; I'd have to see where it would fit in.

I'm also only using three Rhodes Eps now to make room. Sparkle Top, Bright Tines and MkV, Ideal Close. Wurlitzer and Clavs also. Seems to be a good fit.

The Studio Grand 2 is a great choice for the Electro; it works great with the keyboard. I personally prefer the BlueSwede Upright over the Rain Piano, but that's the beauty of the Nord Piano Library. There's something for eveyone!

Have fun making music.

I am using the fazoli XL now..but.. it really seems to lack bottom end. Is it me or do the grands lack bottom end in general? Even my upright sounds much fuller. Eq doesnt seem to help either. maybe its a volume thing.. Ill try to put it lower than my upright
