iPad setup

Post by dcraftfrombr »

I've seen a few posts that talk about using the Yamaha Set List Manager on the iPad for sending program changes to the Nord. I just got an iPad and am not quite sure how to go about configuring the app to work with the NS2. Does anyone have any easy to follow instructions for using the iPad. I have connected the NS2 via the usb connection to the camera kit and I can open GarageBand and if I play the NS2, I hear the notes play out of the iPad, so I know the connection works. I'm just too lazy to figure out the midi codes needed to setup in the Yamaha amp.Thanks.

I've heard of that app, but I haven't used it. I would think you would just have it send 'program change' and 'bank select' MIDI messages to the NS2 via the global MIDI channel (1 by default). Those two MIDI messages are really standard and I doubt you'll have to do anything complicated to use those.

You can probably configure it to have program names instead of 'bank 1, program 117' or something like that. Be aware that MIDI starts counting from 0, while the Nord starts at 1. So selecting 'bank 1, program 117' via MIDI would actually select program 118 in bank 2 on the NS2.

I use an app called OSC touch. Here's a link to the app on app store. post10180.html?hilit=vocalchords#p10180
Here's a link to my thread about it. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/touchosc ... 20394?mt=8
You can draw the buttons any size and have multiple pages which is helpful if you have a lot of patches.
Best of luck.

I use the Yamaha app extensively, and have posted about it on here. I don't use the camera connector though, I use a MIDI interface, either the IOdock by Alesis or the iRig MIDI interface. I don't know that it works with the camera connector, but you can certainly try. One thing to try would be to go into the program screen to change the MIDI program change settings and hit "Learn" and do some things on the Nord and see if it receives anything. That's the way I determined how the Nord works. If you have the channel set correctly, make sure the most significant bit (MSB) is set to 000 and the least significant bit (LSB) is set to either 000, 001, 002 or 003, depending if you want to access Bank A, B, C or D respectively. Then the program number is just a number from 0 to 99 which corresponds to 1 through 100 on the Nord in that bank.

Hi
I had use this app sometimes. It works fine with iPad and Yamaha adapter for iPad. The app can learn from Midi via a special modus for that (pgm button) If the app is connectet to the NS you can see on mainscreen top right a little light blinking. So you can control sending Midi and receive Midi.
Maybe it help you. If not send me an emailadress and i can make some screenshots from iPad and Yamaha Setlist.

By the way - i use an app called Setlistmaker. It is more powerful, special for live gigs!

Cheers - Nordi

The setlistmaker looks good but the thing I like about OSC is that I don't have to scroll to get to my sounds.
I have them in 3 categories so the most I would have to do is hit the category button and then the song title. I could actually fir them all on one page but it would be a little crowded.

In perform modus you do not habe to scroll. The marked songs is always in the middle of the screen.
There are a lot of things better than in yamaha app, so you habe one big bibliothek for all of your songs and you can make a lot of playlists with only some little fingertips. And it is possible to send your screen online to other iPads of your Band. So everyone see the same!!
One thing is better in the yamaha app. You can change the sounds during a song more easyer, because in Setlistmaker you only can safe one Midi-setup

I can confirm that Set List Maker is superb! I use iConnectMIDI -interface to route all my MIDI signals from my three synths and controller. (BTW this interface is great too, allthough it's little cryptic...)

With Set List Maker I can make different databases for different bands. Band database has all the songs, possibly differents sets (special songs is some order) etc. Each song can contain a LOT of information: chord cycles, pdf-notes, keys, tempos, even audio and - for myself the most important - MIDI data. When I choose some song, this app will send program chance messages to all three synths and sometimes some midi CC commands also. Very practical and useful. I have both iPad and iPhone and Set List maker can sync those two. This is great thing because it's much faster to make those settings with iPad but on gigs I like to use iPhone.

One more simple, but VERY important feature: Set List app won't put your iDevice to sleep if you don't use it for a while...

A way to do this in SLM is to create multiple entries. For example, if you have a song "Roundabout" that requires a patch change in the middle, you could create two entries in the database, "Roundabout 1 of 2" and "Roundabout 2 of 2" which would be identical except for the different MIDI commands. When you need to select Roundabout from your master song list and put it into a set, you would simply select those two entries in sequence. Now you can get from your first patch set to your second with s single click/swipe.

Yes thats the way do it now :)
But i have contact to Arlo the programmer of the app, and i have bring some different ideas to him for fixing this. For exampel - in perform modus in the middle of the area where the other buttons are two or three new button .....
