Sustain Overload
Hi Everyone,
I've had my Stage 2 for close to a year, but have a very primitive understanding of its capabilities. My question is this: when I am playing a basic piano sound, and then turn on the synth to layer the sample library on top of the piano, the sound becomes very muddled, and I don't understand why. It's as if I have my foot on the sustain pedal. Does anyone know how I can layer the sound without the sustain sound?
Thanks!

Re: Sustain Overload
Turn off the sustain pedal in the synth section. Do this by holding the shift key and press the left Octave Shift button in the synth section until the light beside SUSTPED turns off. That should do it.

Re: Sustain Overload
If you doing heavy pedaling or have a long release time set on the synth/sample section you'll quickly run into the machine's polyphony limit -- 18 notes. Check out this thread:

Kind of a bummer. I've had to adjust my pedaling and playing style to compensate. It's an interesting situation though -- I wouldn't constantly pedal on a real piano, but it's easy to get into that habit on these digitals because of how the sound decays.

Re: Sustain Overload
Unfortunately, neither approach works. I don't even touch the pedal and the synth sound is completely muddled. I turn down the release all of the way, and even turn off the sustain pedal, and it makes no difference. Either it's a software bug or something is wrong with the Stage 2.

Sustain Overload
Can you upload a mp3 or the program file?

Re: Sustain Overload
Here's an mp3. Don't pay attention to the distortion....it's the sustain I don't understand. I'm not using the pedal at all. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Re: Sustain Overload
Do you have any other pedal connected to the Latch/Rotor input?
Try switching off the Latch on the synth too and verify the polarity of all pedals in the System Menu (don't use Auto, but assign the correct Open/Closed value )

Re: Sustain Overload
I tried. Still doesn't work. And the strangest thing is that, for example, when I use a preset like D8 - the Saloon Piano, and try to layer a sample from the sample library, the samples are almost completely unrecognizable.

Re: Sustain Overload
Have you tried initializing the synth section with "Sound Init"? That will set all of the envelope values back to normal. Hit "Sound Init", then move the synth type to SAMP and dial up the sample you want.
And does this happen with any factory programs that layer a synth on top of a piano?

Re: Sustain Overload
Thanks for the suggestions. I found a fix....all I have to do is hit shift and then "load/init sound" and the problem goes away.
