Mellotron Sample Help

Post by NickAlexander »

Hello, everyone. This is my first post, so I apologize if I've done anything wrong.

I was looking for the Spanish guitar solo from the Beatles' Bungalow Bill, but I can't figure out which Mellotron samples it's from. I tried looking online, but nobody specifies which sample it's from. I tried the SpanishGuitar sample, but it's not there either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, and welcome to the Forum! I'd suggest trying the Nylon Guitar sample in the Nord collection here for a Spanish guitar.

Hi-

That is definitely a real nylon-stringed guitar, not a mellotron. Since the solo at the beginning is isolated, you could just sample it and load it into the Stage 3 using the Sample Editor. Then you could trigger it from a single key. You could also download the sample suggested by WB and play it live-

The whole intro was triggered by pressing a single mellotron key. I don't suppose anybody knows who the guitarist was on the mellotron tape - definitely not a Beatle. Its a bit like asking who the 3 violinists were. I've also no idea what set of tapes it comes from.
Just make your own sample as DJKeys suggested and you would be playing it exactlay as The Beatles did.

„The Spanish guitar introduction, as noted by Mark Lewisohn in The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, was recorded separately and later edited onto the song. It is likely that this took place during The Beatles’ only 24-hour session, spread over 16 and 17 October 1968, during which a number of edit pieces and crossfades for the White Album were finalised.

The guitar flourish was one of a number of seven-second instrument samples included on the Mellotron Mark II. The identity of the guitarist is said to have been Eric Cook, an Australian session musician, although this is unconfirmed.“

I hope Mr. Cook got a nice fat royalty cheque.

I guess the story is similar to that of the Beat It gong intro which was lifted off a Synclavier demo disc.

That was played, though — and not directly sampled off the demo foil.

In this case, I’m sure that the royalties are naught — because the rights to use presets in a commercial setting are part of the purchase price of the machine.

Yes, the Beat It intro gong was recreated and played in the studio but the 7 note phrase was copied from the synclavier demo. Not an exact parallel with BB but there are some similarities.

Back to BB, I've seen a youtube clip of Giles Martin talking about his remaster of THe White Album where he says instead of using the original intro he re-recorded it off the original mellotron which Paul McCartney now owns.

I cannot check now, but could it be one of these Mellotron Master Tapes? https://www.nordkeyboards.com/sound-lib ... ills-mk-ii
