Is the Rotary Stop mode behaving as it should?

Post by ZeroZero »

Newbie here - have read the manual I am not at all clear why the Rotary Leslie is designed this way.

The manual, Pg 52, states:

"To stop the rotors, press the STOP MODE button and set the speed to SLOW/STOP."

In a real Leslie that is spinning, when stop is envoked (by putting the half moon position to centre) the speaker takes some time to slow down then it stops with no evidence of any continuing spin (obviously). The fast mode does not overide the stop.

This is not happening here:

There are two buttons: The Stop button and the Slow/fast button.

There is no way I know to have the bottom Slow/Fast button not show either fast or slow, so I would have thought that the stop button should overide both - it doesn't.

I think this is wrong behaviour. You should be able to go from fast to stop. Stop should overide both slow and fast settings, with an appropriate deacceleration.

Can people explain please?

The STOP button switches the "mode "of the Slow/Fast button, making it become a Stop/Fast, but it is not commanding the Stop by itself.

That's how Rotary Stop it is implemented using the 2 buttons on Nord Stage/Electro/Cx keyboard, since teh first models and was never changed so far.

If you want the traditional behaviour you have 2 ways:

1) use the Nord HalfMoon switch (or equivalent HM/footswitch), on the models that support it.

2) send the Rotary FAST/SLOW/STOP MIDI CCs and values via MIDI (from an external MIDI controller)

An other option (Nord Stage only) is morph the ModWheel to the Rotary speed, this enables continuous control of Rotary speed, not exactly the standard behavior but can be interesting to try.

Alas I don't think the Stage 4 Supports a Half Moon

NS4 Compact does, HA models don't (see NS4 specs on Nord website and Rotor Pedal settings in NS4 manual)

I have a Stage 4 88. I seem to be doing all right - going from Stop to Fast Leslie and back by hitting both buttons either way. Eventually I shall try to connect a real Leslie 145. Thanks for the replies. Did you see my post re Whiter Shade?

I have been using the half-moon switch on my Stage 3 but decided to try the new morph mod wheel to
Leslie option on my Stage 4. So far I really like the continuous control over Leslie speed. The half-moon switch tends to get in the way when transporting the board due to the built-in cord and plug.

How did you fit a half moon on a Stage 4 Stuart?

I actually tend to leave the half moon switch attached to the board when carrying it around; the risk seems bearable to me. But I never leave the plug in the socket: It's the first thing I disconnect after having finished a gig (because otherwise it's a loop that can get caught anywhere).
