Alternative mounting solution for Nord Monitor on Nord Grand

Post by Ichnos »

Hi everyone,

I would like to place my Roland RS-70 on top of my Nord Grand. The Roland is very stable on top of the Grand but I can't mount the monitors when the keyboard is on top. I have a space of about 12,5cm each side, which is too few for the Nord monitors (they fit but they are not too stable and they are not optimally oriented anymore).

Are you aware of any other mounting solution for the Nord monitors? Ideally, a different bracket that I can still attach behind the Grand, or alternatively some stand where I can mount the monitors on and place behind the Grand. I would like to avoid having to place a table behind (I don't have that much space to spare) or to hang a shelf (or anything else) on the wall behind.

Feel free to add any other suggestion on the issue, and thank you all for your input!

What about the standard Nord Monitor Brackets included in the package? Don't they leave enough space vertically?

Ciao Max,
thanks for your answer. I have the standard brackets but unfortunately they don't fit together.
The issue with those are two:
- the Roland has to go too deep behind with respect to the Grand (see photos) in order to be stable, so that the brackets cannot be attached anymore;
- if I first attach the brackets and then try to "slide in" the Roland from front, there is not enough vertical space for it to fit (even without pushing it far enough behind to be stable).

I attached some pictures that hopefully give a better idea of the problem.

Maybe if I slide the Roland from front without the monitors mounted on the brackets, then I can fit the black part under them (see photo in previous post) but I can't mount the monitors on because they would collide with the metal part.
I could try to place a thicker element between the bracket and the monitor, to push the latter up, but i still would have the stability problem.

In the picture you uploaded the monitors look quite much high, but in reality they are not so high (unless there is a version that's a bit longer).
Here is a picture of the Roland together with one bracket for better reference (I took the photos yesterday, hope the pic still conveys the spacing properly).

Uhm...waiting for other suggestions, I'd think of making an "extension" of the original brackets, not too long but just enough to elevate the monitor attachment plate and accomodate the second keyboard; the extension I have in mind would be like a second vertical bar of the same width of the original (or wider so that the original brackets can "slide in" partially), thick enough to support the bracket + monitor without bending and with 2 couple of holes (one for the original brackets and the other to attach it to the Nord).

I cannot make a drawing right now but I hope you get what I mean. It shouldn't be so difficult to find in one of those specialized "carpentry" stores and maybe they can also drill the holes for you at the desired distance.

Otherwise you need to think of using standard nearfield monitor floor-stands like the Proel KP840 (just as an example), if you can make enough space for their "Not so small" triangular base" in the zone where you have your NG.

Can you add a spacer block (wood/plastic/metal) that makes the monitor to be higher than the top part of the RS-70? Paint it black or red ;-)
Or maybe two blocks (per side) one to bring the monitor up and another to offset it away from the back panel? (You will need longer screws, but that is not really an unsurmountable problem.

The problem is that the bent top part of the original brackets (you can see the shape better in the Nord Monitors mounting instructions) is too low and that's what creates the problem with the second keyboard even without the monitors (see detailed pics in second post from Ichnos), that's why you need to raise the whole thing and not just the monitors.

Do you need to have them mounted at the Grand, or can't you use two external stands placed behing them?

Something like this:

I use the solution proposed by @schorsch and @maxpiano. Here is a picture for reference. The JBL 305P MkII monitors I use are 11.7" x 7.3" x 9.1" (298 mm x 185 mm x 231 mm), whereas the Nord Piano Monitors are a bit smaller at 8.7" x 5.9" x 7.8" (220 mm x 150 mm x 198 mm). My top board is only 5" from the wall and I have room to move it an inch or two closer if needed. Don't forget foam isolation pads to place under the monitors.
