Hi folks, I've bought a StudioLogic SL73 controller to act as a second keyboard (more about why down below). It has the capability to send bank select and patch select messages to change patches when you select a profile on the controller. I'd like to be able to have the controller choose a Nord patch.
Per the NE5D manual, there are three parts to patch selection: MSB/LSB and patch number - where MSB is 000, LSB is 0-7, and Patch is 0-49. I've verified via a MIDI monitor that the SL73 is sending those (though curiously the LSB is coming before the MSB, but I presume that's not an issue). The result on the NE is that it changes patches as expected, but not banks - ie. no matter what bank I program, the Nord stays in whatever bank it was in prior, and then changes patches.
Anyone have experience troubleshooting such an issue?
For those who wonder why I care... I often play in the house band for jams, which means other people using my keyboards. I bought the controller to use as a second "weighted" board for pianos, rather than bring my expensive Nord Stage for people to beat on with their ham-fingers. I used to bring my Korg SV-1, which was perfect because of its big radio buttons - I just labelled them with some typical patches they would use, and one press gives them a piano or clav or whatever. However, I keep having to replace keys on the Kord, and it's kind of on its last legs anyway.
Because I want to make it as simple as possible (not all of them are as smart as you), I want to setup a few simple presents "acoustic piano, clean rhodes, phase roads, wurly, clean clav, phase clav, etc." for people to choose via the dial on the controller, rather than dig through all of my 8 banks of presets on the Nord. I can now see how I could make that work within a single bank, though I'll have to make sure I'm on that bank before turning the keys over to them. But it would be great if I could get the bank select working, it would make it pretty simple for someone to come up and find a simple piano patch, which is usually all they're looking for.
