Obviously new here. Just wanted to introduce myself. Name's Kyle and I'm a lifelong pianist. Was toying around with MIDI controllers over the last couple of years but kept reading about the Nord's and their quality boards. Then of course you end up seeing the thing everywhere; concerts, ads, YouTube videos of people playing, etc.
I took the plunge today and ordered a shiny new NP5 from Sweetwater!!
It arrives Saturday morning. I. Can't. Wait.
I think I've watched some of the review videos on YouTube about ten times each!
Happy to be part of this community and can't wait to dive in.

Welcome to the forum, you made an excellent choice! Nord's piano samples are top-notch, and you get access to the excellent Sample Library too, whenever the new library gets released (in the meanwhile, you'll have to make do with the preloaded sounds). Since you've dabbling in MIDI, be aware that your Piano 5 can be connected to any PC or Mac via USB (you only need a USB Type-B cable, those commonly used for printers). Software instruments can open a whole new world of sonic possibilities: you'll be able to try anything ranging from organs to synthesisers, even basses and guitars simulations, all while comfortably playing on your Nord.
Welcome! Since you have researched a lot, you may already be well aware of the "peculiarity" of Nord piano samples... they aren't the kind of polished, digital and "even" sounding pianos of many other brands', but real instruments samplings with all their rawness and quirks to them. They can be made more polished and closer to the abstractness of other brands' by tweaking them (EQ and similar), but it's precisely such rawness and reality that most of people here love about them. That said, at first the encounter might be a bit underwhelming for some. Keep playing with them a bit though before drawing your conclusion... many people, initially underwhelmed, fall in love in a short time...

Thanks for the response everyone!
So when you say "whenever the new library gets released", it was under my impression from the Nord website that I'd have access to the piano/sample library on the website? Is that not true with the NP5?
Sorry, one more question. Say I'm fiddling with the effects for the White Grand to get that perfect, timbre, release, etc. - when I shut the keyboard off will I lose all of that work? Or will The Nord save it as I go along so that I don't have to "set up" each sound again when I use it?

For the moment, you can easily use the piano samples from the Nord website and you can restore your default programs/sounds via the downloadable backup file. The Sample Library 4 that you will need for the sample synth engine isn't published yet. You may find one or another part of it when tweaking the addresses of the Library 3 pages, though.
Concerning changes in your programs: Yes, you will loose your work unless you store it instead of the existing program or as a new program. Cf. p. 15 in the manual.
