MIDI CC control for NE5D second keyboard

Post by fieldflower »

Trying to hook up a brand new M-Audio keystation 61 to my NE5D.
I'm no newbie to running dual kbds as I've had a Yamaha P-155 connected for years.
Playing with Upper Receive works the way I want it, and the M-Audio pitch wheel worked straight away - fun with bends on the NE5D. :)
Also the Volume slider on the M-Audio works to control Part volume on the NE5D.

But the thing is that the M-audio has a modulation wheel that I'd like to assign to run Rate on Effect 1 (CC 63 according to manual), and I just can't make it work.
I can see on the MIDI LED on the NE5D that something is being received when I turn the mod wheel, but can't get it to run the Effect Rate.
The only thing I've managed to control with the mod wheel is the "Control Pedal (Expression)"; CC 11, which is exactly what the Volume slider does.

I've set the NE5D to Send/Receive on both Control Change and Program Change, but beyond that I haven't found anything that would remedy the problem.
Have tried to disable Global control (based on some thread in here) but did nothing.

Current MIDI settings are
Global: 2
Lower rec: 2
Upper Rec: 1
Upper Split: 1

Have searched the forum but not found the answer (or maybe did find it, but wasn't clever enough to realize that was the answer).
I realize it may be some missing setting on the M-Audio keyboard, but guessing it's a common board that some persons here may have insights into as well...

It sorta works if I assign CC 11 to the Mod wheel and turn on Ctrl Pedal on Effect 1, but it kills volume at the same time as it decreases Effect Rate, so it doesn't really work.

If I remove Ctrl Pedal from controlling Part Upper volume and have Ctrl Pedal activated on Effect 1, the control pedal is doing what I'm after - controls Effect Rate without affecting volume.
But if I set the Mod wheel to CC 11 it affects both volume and Effect rate at the same time. On the same settings...

I'm so lost...

Found a post addressing this exact topic (search via Google instead of forum search).
If I understand correctly it's a matter of the NE5 only receiving Effect Rate changes on the Global channel.
But if I set the M-Audio to send on Global channel it won't play the Upper Receive part.

So unless I figure out a way to get the Mod wheel CC 63 to go on another channel than the usual keyboard MIDI messages it's a choice between:
a: Separated keyboards but no mod wheel control over Effect rate.
b: Control over Effect rate, but both keyboards will play Part Lower.

Have managed to get some kind of alternative function by not using Split: Upper Receive, but rather setting some split point on the NE5.
1. If I do that with the M-Audio on its own channel (1 as per my above MIDI settings) the NE5 will split wherever I set the split point, but the M-Audio will play Part upper on the full keyboard.
No Effect rate control in this setting, so a no-go for my particular desire.

2. If I change the M-audio to the global channel (2 as per above) the NE5 will still split Upper/Lower as per split point, but the M-Audio will play Lower alone up to split point, and both Upper & Lower after the split point.
In this setting I do have control over Effect Rate, as the M-Audio is sending on Global channel.

So if I use method 2 I can play Part lower alone on the M-audio before the split point and Part upper on the NE5 after the split point, while having control over the Effect rate on the M-Audio Mod wheel.
Or set the split point far left and play Upper/Lower simultaneously on the M-Audio, with control over the Effect Rate.
Can also play with Octave on both NE5 (changes pitch only) and M-Audio (also moves split point).

And if I layer instead of split I get:
1. With M-Audio on its own channel it plays Part Upper standalone, while the NE5 plays layered Upper/Lower. No Effect Rate control from mod wheel.
2. With M-Audio on Global channel both keyboards play layered Upper/Lower, but here I have mod wheel control over Effect rate.

Feels like I'm more or less exploring loopholes and glitches, but I guess there are some useful ways around in all the above... :wtf:
The only useful way around it is to use a couple of settings, so not to get lost on stage in the heat of the moment.
Thankfully the M-Audio is really quick to change Channel on - it's just 2 keystrokes.

A MIDI Solutions Router or Event Processor might give you what you need... either should let you take the output of the M-audio keys and pitch bend and route them to the Nord's Upper Receive channel, while also letting you take the output of the M-audio mod wheel and route that to the Nord's Global channel. You can probably also do this with an iPad app like Keystage.
