Nord Piano 2 - Sustain Pedal issues

Post by superexpress »

Hi all,

As the title suggests, really, i've had problems with my NP2 and the sustain pedal for a long time.

The 3 pedal pedal (!) crapped out under 2 years after I bought the piano. Looks like the spring on the actual sustain pedal went. I was touring a lot at the time and just didn't have the time and inclination to get it fixed. I was slightly miffed that such an alleged premium product would stop working so soon.

I replaced it with a cheap M-Audio pedal (I literally just needed the sustain part). At least four of these M-Audio pedals broke on me, and I put it down to them being cheap pedals. Chords would be left hanging, the pedal would sound like it was constantly depressed (like me ). In 6 years of ownership I've had at least as many pedals. The keyboard has spent the vast majority of its life as a studio master keyboard, so not moved.

Taking advice from an old thread on this forum, I spent a little more and bought a Yamaha sustain pedal. You guessed it - this has also 'broken' and leaves chords hanging.

Jokes aside, I'm actually really frustrated now. It appears there are similar issues online. I have been out of work for over a year thanks to Covid, and I can't afford another pedal or to get this thing serviced. I really need to try and get to the bottom of what's causing this. I am now suspecting that something is wrong with the keyboard itself.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what might be wrong? It is literally impossible to play or record at this moment, which is sad.

The connection at the keyboard for the sustain pedal does sound like a likely suspect.

How forcefully do you engage the pedal? While odds are good this is an electrical problem, if not, it’s mechanical and with the string of failures from different brands, it’s worth asking the question.

Good luck!

I have a Nord piano 4 for about 2 years - mostly play some at home & at church every now and then. My sustain pedal acted up several times & I turned it off / on & after 5, 6 times it won't work. I've been told to plug into my computer and do a reset and am going to do that this wekend. Has anyone had similiar problems and how was it resolved? Of course the concern is that it broke once it could very well happen again. Thank you

Hi,

I don't usually talk in this forum but just realized this is exactly the same problem I am facing. I have a Nord stage 2 EX and have already broken a nord sustain pedal and a roland in a matter of 6 months. Current pedal is working fine though.
My feeling is that it has to do with how long the keyboard is turned on: the longer it stays on (I usually left it on day and night) the most likely the problem occurs, at least in my case. So it might be that being turned on during long time heats the electronics between the connector and the pedal craps out (¿? just guessing!)
I am getting used to turn it off when I am not using the keyboard and for the time being the new pedal is surviving.
Hope this helps.

Just test the pedal with a multimeter.

With the reports of so many broken sustain pedals from a single user, I'd suspect that the player might be stomping a bit too hard on the pedal. It is true, pedals can and do break down, even with "normal" use. But they will break down even faster if too much hard stomping is applied.
