Midi connection

Post by 363Jensen »

Just purchased the Nord Electro 6D 61 after having owned and used the Nord Electro 2 73 for many years.

I have never used MIdi, but after seeing a demo on Youtube which mentioned this as an option, my question is as follows :

1. Would it work to use the Midi interface connecting Nord Electro 6D 61 to the slightly older Nord Electro 2 73 ?
2. Could I still use different sounds e.g. playing piano on the Electro 2 and another sound on Electro 6
I only saw a demo of the drawbar organ selection on both keyboards
3. How about the sound to the amp/speaker, would that still be using both connection from the Electro 2 and the Electro 6, or would the output from Electro 2 be using the Midi connection to Electro 6, so the connection to amp/speaker only needs to come from Electro 6

Sorry for being a newbie :-)

:D Hi there,

so first thing to note: MIDI is not the same (equal) to standard audio output. Which means, you can't send audio through MIDI port --> it sends info data about what keys/buttons are pressed, for how long, how hard etc... So to answer your 3rd question first, it's not possible to play electro 2 programs and send them as audio to electro 6 and after that to amp/speaker. If you want to play sounds from both e2 and e6, you should connect both of them to amp/speaker.

On the other hand, if you want to use e2 as MIDI controller for e6, it's possible. You should connect them through MIDI port, and now there are settings to adjust it to work (there is already topics on this forum about connecting MIDI).
Thing is that you can now play different sounds from e6 using e2, and control e6 by e2 (I think vice versa too, but not sure about that one). For that, you don't need to connect Electro 2 to an amp/speaker, because you are only controlling Electro 6 with Electro 2, that being said, electro 6 should be the only one connected to the amp/speaker.

One more thing, if you want to control Electro 6 using your electro 2 via MIDI and still play some sounds from electro 2 too, it's possible, but look what I've wrote at the top of this post: in that case you should connect e2 and e6 with MIDI between them and both of them to the Amp/Speaker. Note that in that case you have to adjust programs to work for you so you can play sounds from e6 on e2, and both sounds from e2 and e6 independent.

Hope that helps. ;)

Well, there are some issues left to consider.

For playing Electro 2 and 6 at the same time, you don't need a MIDI connection. You just need to connect both instruments to an amplification - either using multiple inputs (or a mixer) or connecting audio-out on the NE2 to audio-in on the NE6. Why should you want to connect your new NE6 to your NE2 just to play your old sounds? Is the keybed of the NE2 broken?

If you want to play organ with two manuals, it would be possible: Connect MIDI-out of your NE2 to MIDI-in of your NE6 and set Extern-keyboard-to-low.

I'm not sure if you can split your NE6 keyboard so that the keys of one zone will play internally and only the other send MIDI data to the second keyboard.

Last point: You'll have to see how the sustain pedal will react. Maybe you have to use 2 sustain pedals.
