Newbie: Splitting organ section for octave shift

Post by newhabits »

Hi - Sorry for asking newbie questions, but we're all new once, right?

I'd like to split the keyboard so that I can play the organ on both sides of the split, but set a different octave shift on one or the other.

So, I set up a split point, then in the Organ section I selected the relevant Kbd Zone (Shift-Kbd Zone) (lower section in this case), then did an octave shift for the zone I wanted, then went back and turned on all Kbd Zones (again with Shift), but ... the octave shift I set (in the lower section) did not stick.

What am I doing wrong? Am I just misunderstanding, and that the split cannot do this?

I'm missing the word "panel" in your explanation. Of course, you can only use every sound engine once in your setting. But on a Stage, you have everything two times: organ, piano and synth on panel A and organ, piano and synth on panel B. If you want separate organ sounds in two different zones, you need to set the organ on panel A for one zone, set the drawbars and perc to your liking, and set the organ on panel B for the other zone (same with drawbars). Some settings are shared for both panels together - but not the octave shift.

You will never split a sound engine, only the keyboard. And then assign one or more engines to one or more zones. You might need to consult the manual to fully understand how to deal with zones and engines - and put all together into a program (don't forget to store somewhere in an empty program place (above M:11, I think).

Ah - ok. Seems cumbersome to have to set up each panel with one zone silenced in one zone (and one zone octave shifted in one panel) just to achieve what might have been more simply done as I described. But, I suspect in the long run the method you describe has other values, too.

Thanks

It takes a few minutes or longer to wrap your mind around the dual panels on the NS3, both of which have their own Organ, Piano, Synth, and External parts. Some of the real power of the NS3 (and predecessors) is the way in which you can set up splits and layers across all of these engines, using both panels. One thing I did to help speed up production of sounds was creating some "templates" for lack of a better term, where I saved programs with commonly used sound combinations, such as basic piano, organ, clav, synths, but then create some that have splits and layers in them. So when I'm wanting to make a new program that has (for example) organ on the lower end, piano in the middle, and synth up top, I have some kind of source material already available. Then it's just a matter of dialing in the sounds, octave settings, etc.

I'm only one year ahead of you. And I'm sure you won't talk like that any more in only a few months. The one and only goal of the Nord design is not setting up a sound with a few clicks, but to be able to directly tweak every single element with a single knob or button. Indeed: Before being able to tweak, you need to set up a sound. Just play around with some included sounds to see how it goes.

Hello and welcome to the Forum! When setting up the split with the two organs, only the upper split should have touch percussion, the lower manual on the B3 doesn't have it. I have over 80 programs for the Stage 3 posted at nord-stage-3-programs-ns3p-ns3pb-files- ... 15748.html that might be of help to you and a B3 split can also be found at
nord-stage-3-programs-ns3p-ns3pb-files- ... 15722.html. I hope this helps, take care.
