Nord Stage 3 randomizer
https://stash.reaper.fm/41473/Nord.zip
Hi,
This great forum is dominated by people who produce loads of beautiful sounds for the Stage 3, often heard on commercial recordings. In order to redress the balance a little, here is a link to some software that will randomise all or some of the Nord Stage 3 settings by sending loads of randomised CC values.
It runs as a JS effect in Reaper (windows or mac) - that's the bad news - because I do not know how to code VSTs. But Reaper will run as uncrippled evaluationware on a USB pen drive so no-one is completely excluded. The zip includes a track template to be helpful and I would point out, if you are going to brave Reaper for the first time, that by default all the midi in/outs on your computer have to be enabled within the program. Both for note input as well as CC input.
If anyone knows of a way to get at the remaining parameters in the Stage 3 I would be grateful to know. I don't think it is possible but would love to be proved wrong.
So once you have the JS effect installed, along with the png file (for eye candy), and the midi port sorted, and the track template loaded in reaper, and you have set the midi ouput of the track itself to be the correct midi channel; the JS effect may work. When opened it will do nothing, allowing the midi channels for global/a/b to be set to be the same as your keyboard's channels. Then you can select a panel to randomise, and if you want to do everything or just part of the panel. There are other selections available to further refine the process - e.g. only coming up with a certain organ type.
If you want to randomise both panels you will need to manually focus the Stage 3 to select a panel and then press the Random slider. I could not work out how to reliably control the CC6 and CC8 values to do it another way.
Keep pressing the random slider for another go. Eventually something will occur that can be further refined by twiddling the Nord's controls. Save the program. Come up with 50 such programs and sell them on the internet!
Good luck if you take the plunge. The link above is to where the randomizer is within the Reaper stash.

Re: Nord Stage 3 randomizer
If you are here for almost 2 years, it's not very likely that you just signed on to spread junk. But who tells us that the zip file won't randomise our computer instead of the sound settings on the Stage 3? Sorry for the precaution.

Re: Nord Stage 3 randomizer
Shall I remove the zip and just put the Js effect up? Or could I send you the 3 files and you put them somewhere? I only zipped them because otherwise they would need to go into 3 different places in the Reaper stash.

Anyway, - zip removed from the reaper stash. There is no way I am going to be accused of spreading viruses.

Sorry for that. I even didn't know what stash.reaper.fm is as web address - and didn't want to test. Looked strange to me.

Re: Nord Stage 3 randomizer
Honestly it's the content itself of your post that looks a bit strange, if I may, let alone the content of the link itself.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinite_monkey_theorem
I don't think people will download and install dubious software to do what can be done with any free MIDI editor. Not sure what the "(in)complete exclusion" bit means either.
So what you're saying is "since you folks create such amazing sounds, let's balance things out by generate some random noise by just shuffling things up until something nice might eventually come out"?Lamacanyon wrote: This great forum is dominated by people who produce loads of beautiful sounds for the Stage 3, often heard on commercial recordings. If you mean SysEx messages, this has come up before and it seems Nord have never published their format/address. So all we have is CCs.Lamacanyon wrote: If anyone knows of a way to get at the remaining parameters in the Stage 3 I would be grateful to know. So if I won't be able to come up with enough nice random sounds by the time the "evaluationware" time expires, this is the way to get rich: to buy the randomiser and sell "sounds" to people who are going to inevitably think they're wonderful?Lamacanyon wrote: Keep pressing the random slider for another go. Don’t worry everyone. I’ve taken down the zip file and I won’t bother posting anything again. Honestly, you just try and be helpful and this is what happens.

Re: Nord Stage 3 randomizer
Sorry man, you just ran into a day where the first repliers were a guy who doesn't know what Reaper is, and er... that other guy (is there any other kind of day on this forum at the moment?) I think it's cool that you shared your work, keep it up.Lamacanyon wrote:Don’t worry everyone. I’ve taken down the zip file and I won’t bother posting anything again. I already said, I'm sorry for frustrating you. Just yesterday a relative of mine got hacked via a social media account. Found your post funny and unclear at the same time.

It was a fun idea - along the lines of generative design (a machine learning concept that can be quite useful). Thanks for sharing.Lamacanyon wrote:Don’t worry everyone. I actually thought it could have been fun to extend the idea with a feedback mechanism to constrain the evolution in some of the dimensions to make it more useful.
I've had students doing their MSc on similar ideas, just in another domain/field of use
