Electro 5 damaged

Post by lilcheezcurd »

Hi, I'm new to the forum so please excuse any boners .

So a friend fell on my nord pretty hard and it crashed off the stand. Now a whole octave is dead.
I live in a rural location without options for professional repair and thinking I'll fix it myself. I watched some YouTube repair videos about cleaning contacts for a dead key or two and it looks like something I can do.
Because a whole section of keys is out I thought there maybe a different approach?
Any advice or tips?
Thanks

If there isn't physical damage to the keys, than you may be lucky and a simple cable has come loose.

otherwise it will likely be much more complicated and not like cleaning a key contact.

If your comfortable opening keyboard, then I'd at least take a look and see what sort of damage may have been done, and maybe it will just be a cable you can re-insert.

Yes, it sounds more like a cable or broken connection to the contacts, not the contacts themselves.

If the PCB has been bent, it may have caused a wire/strip of copper to fracture.

So check first if any cables are torn, connectors are loose or PCBs bent/fractured.

Thanks for the replies

Opened her up, connections were good.

One smaller connector under the keybed, kinda like a phone cord plug, seemed a little floppy. I secured it better but there's still no sound from those keys.

I watched a couple more vids and think I'll dig a little deeper on another excursion soon.

If I can't fix it and can't find anyone local to, what are my options? Ship it to Nord or sweetwater?

So if its not a loose cable than the most likely scenario is a cracked PC board.

Agree with cgrafx - check the PCB of you can. Connectors or large components are good too check first as they can cause more force in the interaction. Probably the power sides are more prone to crack but vias and inner layers can also be damaged (not sure how many layers are used here).
