I am using my NS2 for over 2 years now, and with my new cover band (Disco/Funk/Pop/...) I'm looking for a way to get many of the original sounds on stage. I will keep on using my Nord for all the main sounds/synths, but looking for a good way to sample some of the original sounds, preferably without a laptop.
So basically what I am trying to reach:
* creating/downloading sounds: which applications do I need?
* storing them on a nice synth/keyboard: Any recommendations?
* play live with it

Definitely doing that already! However, I find some limitations when wanting to layer / split some sounds on the Nord & want some leads at the same time.
Buying a NS3 crossed my mind , but first need to do some research on the biggest differences...
There are lots of keyboards which let you play custom sampled sounds. But they vary enormously in how many megabytes worth custom samples they can hold. Do you have a rough idea of what you need?
Possibilities cheaper than a Nord Wave 2 include Roland Juno DS, Casio MZ-X500, Yamaha MODX, Kurzweil PC4, Korg PA700/PA1000.
Also, remember that your NS2 has its EXT functions. You can use that to trigger keyboard-playable sampled sounds (or alternate synth sounds, whatever) from an attached iPhone/iPad, for example. Though could still run into not having enough keys (or split regions) on the Nord to access all the sounds you want to combine.
I don't think there are big enough differences between the NS2 and NS3 (I had the NS2 and now the NS3) in terms of their ability to split and layer samples. The engines are essentially the same, and you are limited to two synths. Split and layer features are not that much different, but the two synth limitation is there. The other boards mentioned by Scott would all definitely give you more synth capability-

You already have synth and sample x2 in your stage 2.
What sounds are you not able to create and are you sure its not possible with an S2.
I have to admit... for some songs I also have troubles with “only” 2 synth layers
Sure, for most songs you won’t need more than that, but sometimes there are more different synths layered or played simultaneously, or the sound changes throughout the song...
For nearly all songs I play live, it would already make a biig difference to have a Stage 3 because of the seamless transitions
But then again, I can’t justify buying a Stage 3 for 5 songs
