Help Choosing a Sequencer To Use With a Stage 3

Post by StillPlayin »

Hi! I’m hoping to get a little advice on sequencing. I’ve been playing and teaching for a long time, now semi-retired and with the extra time I’ve been playing for enjoyment, and find myself with musical ideas coming out of my head into my hands! Really enjoying it, but now want to save them simply and efficiently as they pop up.

I know little in this area and want something simple. Just want to be able to hit ‘record’, play some melodies and chords on the keyboard, then hit ‘save’. Do not need, or even want to edit, quantize, step record, etc. The ability to record and save up to 4 tracks is really all that’s necessary. If I could see the notes I played on a screen when reviewing the tracks later, that would be a bonus. I’m a piano player, so not looking to put down beats, samples, or loops or anything like that. Just looking for simple record, save, add an additional track or two, then playback for my own enjoyment.

Hardware or software is OK. I have a Nord Stage 3 88, and an iPad Pro. Budget is whatever it takes, but hopefully less than a couple/few hundred $. Simplicity of operation is key, I’m in my 60’s and want user friendly, intuitive interface, and easy learning curve if possible.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Check out Reaper, it's free to try and cheap to buy. For very basic multitrack audio, Audacity is free and very easy to use.

You could also consider Cakewalk by Bandlab, which is a full-featured DAW, including MIDI sequencing. There may be a bit of a learning curve for some of the features, but may be worth the time, depending on how deep you want to dive. But (in my experience, anyway), once the MIDI and/or audio interface is set up between your keyboard and computer, it's pretty easy to just "hit record" to capture you creativity.
