Song Mode question

Post by NORD_Hammond »

Hi Folks,
I am in the process of exploring the features of my new NS3 and I am stuck a bit in the section "Song Mode".
Is the following correct, I wonder?
I create and name a SONG - f.e. 2.04 - where I want to have three different sounds for. First finding: I only can have "PROGRAMS" put into Sound Mode, NOT just a SynthSound or an Organ f.e.??
So I have to create PROGRAMS 1, 2 and 3 elsewhere - outside SongMode - and consequently fill the three parts of Song Mode with these three programs? Correct?
So far so good.
Now when playing in Song Mode I would like to change just a setting or volume of one of the three sounds and hence want to save that. DO I HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE CREATED PROGRAM IN ORDER TO CHANGE THE SOUND/VOLUME AND CAN NOT DO THIS WITHIN THE SOUND MODE?
Thanks for any input!

You have it all correct. A song is a set of pointers (like Mac aliases or Windows shortcuts) to existing Programs. The only things you can store within a song are the particular program locations that are being referenced. Any changes to any of the sounds muyst be done in the Programs themselves. As it says in the manual:
Program edits that have been made when in Song mode will not be stored when a song is stored, as the song only contains references to program locations. To store an edited program, first exit Song mode by pressing SONG MODE – which brings up the edited program at its program bank location – and then perform a Store operation normally.

Hi Tilman,

there is a manual in German language. So it's super easy to file through the pages and get profound information how things go.

The way Song mode works should indeed have an impact on how to proceed and develop sounds - it'd be only the last step in organizing your instrument.

Thanks to you both!
That means I'd better make a copy of the original program before making changes for Song Mode use so that I can go back to this copy later out of Song Mode in order to make ADJUSTMENTS without touching the original NS3 program, correct?

You can do so, but keep in mind that adjustments cannot be saved to a program while being in song mode, you would have to exit song mode and then explicitly save the changes to the program. It's quite unlikely that you will save any adjustments by accident

Thanks Schorsch!
I've got it now: Song Mode is in deed just a place for complete programs. As soon as I want to make changes I have to leave Song Mode, do the changes elsewhere, I'd prefer in a copy of the original NS3 program, and then put this changed program back into Song Mode.
Another question arose: I connected a BOSS FS-6 via MONO Klinke to the up/down switch port of my NS3 and immediately the whole keyboard shut OFF. I assume the port expects a STEREO Klinke for up/down double switch, correct?
Thanks and have a nice weekend!

Right, a Boss FS-6 needs 2 TS or one TRS cable to be connected - in the case of a NS3, you'll need a a cable with TRS (3 connectors = "stereo") plugs/jacks.

My dealer enclosed the wrong cable, too - but I don't understand why.

And I don't understand, why your instrument shut off. One single thing: Try to get used to connect plugs to your instrument only when off, as a NS3 i.e. will check the connected gear while booting.

The advantage of Song mode is that you might have a favorite program you use in multiple songs, so you can reference it multiple times simply pointing to it. I use song mode to cover multiple programs for a single song and also build my setlist.

Yes and you typically DO want to make your changes in a copy. If you make changes in the original, then any OTHER song you have that uses that same sound will have its sound changed as well. Sometimes that's a good thing, but not if it's not what you intended!

Doesn't the NE6 have a similar shortcut like the NE5 has in Set list mode, to hold down the shortcut button while saving which lets the save go through to the program?
