The one that you find best for you to play it
(same as classical music and ... I don’t think it is a good idea to open one topic for each genre

Tongue-in-cheek answer
Next topic by sussko: which is the best piano sound for death-core country music played with a kletzmer ensemble?
Serious answer
the one you like most and sounds best from your amplification system.

For solo, I'd say try to make the piano sound like Ahmad Jamal. For ensemble playing, like Herbie Hancock

Re: Best Piano Sound for playing jazz?
If you play a piano you usually don't have a big choice. You have to create your sound out of the given specifications. With a Nord Stage, Grand or Piano, it's different. You do have a choice. And there is no shortcut: You have to listen to yourself playing the different sounds with different settings and different EQing. After a few months, I can say: I've taken a starting point and the voyage through the sounds will probably take some years. In the end, it will be _my_ sound and _my_ music.
What I'm listening to:
- warmth
- brilliance/clearness
- individualism/singularity
- unity in character
- neat loop points
of the samples
Enjoy your sounds!

Re: Best Piano Sound for playing jazz?
Hi nordies,
I have the feeling that all these topics about ´What‘s the best piano sound for this or that‘ were a bit too theoretical, perhaps even a bit too much nitpicking about only one element of making good music - the sound source. At youtube or wherever else there are tons of good videos with a multitude of piano sounds, of playing techniques, of acting on stage with contact to the audience etc. Sussko, you just need to play your keyboard and try some three or four favourite pianos on the real stage PA. Your rhythm or groove may have more influence than the most up to date soundfile. And the voicing of the chords you play, not only left hand but also lead hand, has an enormous impact of how you are coming through. Play live, try to imitate your idols until you have developed your own style. In Jon Lord‘s words: Before I forget - it‘s all music.
Hope you are all healthy and do look forward to playing live again soon. I doooooo. Sunny regards from the middle of Germany

Re: Best Piano Sound for playing jazz?
Well I'm going to give an answer... I agree with everything above, but I find that I use Studio Grand 2 for settings where I need that bright top end to cut through (I add a lot of bass and treble to it, plus some high mid). I'm trying to use White Grand more for solo playing although it still lacks a bit of presence, helped by eq.
