Detune Saw/Pulse on S3

Post by kbmatson »

Hi - I'm trying to set up synth (on one panel BTW) to have a rectangle wav (the skinny one) mixed with a Saw, which I can do, but then de-tune them slightly from each other, which I can't figure out. The only fine detune option I see is if they both have the same wav? What am I missing here?

I think the Unison function may be your best bet.

Manual, Edition L, Page 36: With the Detune configuration Oscillator 2 provides a copy of Oscillator 1, which can be both coarsely tuned in semi tone intervals and fine tuned in small increments.

Manual, Edition L, Page 41: UNISON - The Stage 3 synthesizer oscillator has a number of “hidden”, slightly detuned, oscillators which can added to the basic sound for those fat, classic synthesizer sounds. note that using Unison does not reduce the polyphony! A UNISON setting of 1, 2 or 3 equals a classic dual oscillator de-tuning effect with an increasing amount of de-tune between the oscillators.

Yep - that's what I've fallen back to. The Synth in the S3 is a bit of a conundrum - can sound really good and get some cool stuff out of it - playing samples is great! But the lack of some basic synth 101 functionality can be maddening at times!

Wow, I really tried to create this 2 different wave detune , but short of Wide Chorus and/or unison on 3, I only came up with two work arounds...
1)Is there and organ section sound, such as Farfisa or something, on one drawbar, such as 8, that sounds close enough to the rectangle wave to use it as the 2nd wave form? That would free you up to detune the Saw wave. Short of that, I believe you are running right into a limitation of the instrument. 2) The only other alternative I see, is bringing in a custom sample wav form that already has the two detuned wave forms.

Or, you could make a sample of a slightly flat or sharp pulse wave and use that toghether with the saw.

Good suggestion and very simple - just sample a lower note with no effects or filter/volume decay and let the interpolation cover all the keys.

Thanks all - I've just used the "unison" function and it is working well enough for me for what I needed.

I'm glad you found an easy solution. I want to joke around and say "thats too easy"
If you want to play around more with detune, I found Farfisa with with drawbar 4. and some 2.5 and 2 along with cranking the treble, gets real close to the rectangle wave. But of course, you wouldn't have envelope control etc. of the farfisa.
