I've got a few piano basses in my studio, if i can figure out how to make samples, I'll do it! I've got a sparkletop and an old fiesta red model that has an even rounder sound.

That's great! If you can just record straight samples of a few keys, send me them and i'll do the rest.

I know the nsmp format doesn't support multiple velocities (right? at least multiple samples per note, right?) but how many samples can you do total? any nsmp-for-dummies writeups out there?

The NSE manual is very comprehensive.

One very important consideration to the process is sampling.
The NSE software is mainly a sample editor and compiler. It will allow for as many samples as you have keys on the keyboard. The looping function is on by default, and will need to be turned off for the piano bass samples.

I use Audacity for my recording program. Most of the time I record the individual notes as single sample files and save them with the note number at the end i.e. Brass_woodwind_14.wav which would be C2 on the keyboard.
Another method would be saving with the note name at the end i.e. Brass_woodwind_C2.wav Whichever way you choose to do it, the NSE can recognize either format when using the auto-assign function of"Single Sample Per File Assign". The main advantage to using the single file method is that you can easily vary the number of samples in a sample set and make splits if necessary, like my Mellotron Strings /Flute split:

A third way that I've just started using is: to record all sample notes, starting with the lowest and moving the same interval up, leaving a brief segment of silence in between, all notes in the same .WAV file. This is the "Multi Sample Per File Assign" method:
NSE_SS_1.JPG
NSE_SS_1.JPG (135.48 KiB) Viewed 5760 times

I used this method with the Journey Separate Ways Synth sound. My preferred interval for synths is 6 semitones, or every C and F#
This method is extremely fast. I programmed the synth sound on my NSEx, recorded the sample, compiled, tested, played/ recorded the demo with NE3, uploaded files to the forum, all in less than 10 minutes.

Good luck with your sampling project, the process gets quicker with practice.

Cheers, Hanon

yeah the only concerns I have are consistent velocity and making it sound good without the benefit of velocity layers and note-off samples.. it won't be good enough to stand as a solo instrument, i suppose, but it should work as a bass line in a song

Can you also share an archive with the wav files? I think a lot of people would like to create their own splitted sample (for example bass + e. piano, bass + organ...)
