Re: nord lead 2x expression pedal help
Why roland EV5 for gigging and Yamaha FC7 for home or studio, I have the FC7 for my Nord stage, I used it for Giging, so what the EV5 will be better for gigs?

Re: nord lead 2x expression pedal help
I guess it's just Ledbetter's personal preference. Personally I think the Roland EV5 is an overpriced and poor quality pedal - very unreliable. I would just carry on using your Yamaha FC7 for everything.

Re: nord lead 2x expression pedal help
@Quai34: Some people said they prefer to carry around the lighter EV5 to the heavier FC7.
I had a EV5 for about 2 years and while yes, it is made of plastic, I can't say that it has been unreliable. Maybe I have been lucky.
If I had to buy another pedal I think I would go for the FC7.

Re: nord lead 2x expression pedal help
I just bought an FC7 a couple of days ago and used it at a gig on Saturday. It replaced my Boss FV500L which died on me - the friction mechanism broke and it just kept flopping to full on - not fun when you've got two sustain pedals and a leslie switch to operate at the same time! I'm disappointed in the FV500, I thought I'd get more than two or three years out of it - I'm not a heavy user, generally just for fading sounds and layers. It had not one, but two broken grub screws inside, so I guess it really was at the end of its life.
The first thing that struck me about the FC7 was how much more pedal travel there actually is. There's an enormous difference and it made using the pedal to set levels precisely much, much easier. It looks every bit as solid and reassuring as the Boss, but it's far too early to make predictions about how well it will hold up in practise.
As far as the EV5 is concerned, of course most of them will work - no matter how unreliable they are, the failure rate is still only going to be a small percentage of the total pedals sold, otherwise they would have been off the market a long time ago. Nevertheless, the construction is flimsy compared to the FV500 or the FC7, so the fact that (in the UK at least) they are exactly the same price as the FC7 just seems ridiculous.
The EV5 I bought only worked intermittently straight out the box. Despite the fact that there is only a pot and a few wires, I couldn't actually detect a wiring fault at all. Everything seemed to measure fine even when it wasn't functioning, no shorts, opens or detectable intermittents, so straight into the bin it went. I had it for about four hours. (Should have returned it, but - well, I am an old grumpy-boots, so there you go!)

Re: nord lead 2x expression pedal help
You mention the intermittent fault. Did it happen in other kbds too?
I do remember something like that and expression pedals in the NS2:
http://www.norduserforum.com/post25066. ... zkb#p25066
Some gain issue was fixed in OS 1.70.
If you still get the pedal, maybe you can try it in EV7 mode and see if it works.

Re: nord lead 2x expression pedal help
Thanks for the info, Mr_-G-, that looks interesting. I only used the EV5 connected to my Stage classic and routed it via MIDI to my other keyboard as necessary, so I never tried it on anything else. I did consider a hardware problem in the Stage, a dodgy or dirty jack-socket or something similar, but a different pedal worked just fine, so that obviously wasn't it. Frankly, I never considered a firmware or software problem. But it always bugged me that I couldn't find, let alone fix, any problem with the EV5. I'm not an electronics engineer, but I've been servicing and repairing analogue gear, as well as doing all the the usual soldering leads and whatnot, for decades now. I am certainly competent enough to find a simple wiring problem. And I just couldn't.
The EV5 is long gone, so I guess I'll never really know. I still didn't like the build quality, so I'm not really interested in using another EV series pedal anyway.

Re: nord lead 2x expression pedal help
The reason I prefer the EV5 for gigs is it's packable size and light weight. In my home studio, I use Moog expression pedals because they are heavy and, IMHO, bulletproof. I have a twenty year old EV5 that is still going strong. Everyone should use what they are comfortable with.

By the way, to LedBetter, why did you say Roland EV for gigs and Yamaha FC7 for home or studio?
