XL piano samples sound like S

Post by pinsonic »

Hello, i just got me a stage 2 and try to get the mellow piano working in XL... without succes.
I loaded it into the instrument from the sound manager, but when i select it from the piano select section on the stage 2, i hear no string resonances... i tried pressing two chords shortly after eachother while keeping the keys down for long sustain, comparing that to pressing them only short but with the sustain pedal... result: sounds exactly the same... Is there something i should activate or something?

thanks for possible hints

You need to switch on string resonance in the piano section to hear any, if you haven't. Top right button in the piano section.

Seems you didn't read the same answer to your previous post with the same question... http://www.norduserforum.com/post94263.html#p94263

Consider also that sympathetic resonance doesn't happen between adjacent chords or repeating the same chord, but between octaves, 5ths and other overtones of the fundamental (lowest) one, see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sympathetic_resonance

Try to hold a low C pressed, with no pedal, then hit a C chord one or two octaves above, quickly, for example. After you release the C chord keys you will hear the resonances triggered by it.

Sympathetic resonance is not *just* octaves/fifths etc., though it is more pronounced.

If you gently press down a couple of keys slowly enough to not make a sound, hold them, and then bang on other keys while holding them, they will resonate.

They resonate anyway on overtones (which I mentioned in my sentence, if you read it again, as it was intended exactly to not limit to octave, fifths...) of their fundamental, i.e. frequencies which have an integer relationship to it, as explained in the Wiki entry ;)

For a full list of overtones see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic_series_(music)

Anyway, back to main topic, it works properly with non-S samples on the Nord Stage, when activated

Sorry, I wasn't clear:

If you press and hold the lowest "e" softly enough for it to not make a sound, it will resonate even if you hit the lowest "f#" right next to it, despite those tones not sharing any partials until WAY up in the harmonic spectrum.

If you hit a higher "e" or any other direct partial, it will resonate much more loudly and with different overtones, but string resonance happens between all notes on a piano (and on the Nord).

OK, I get your point and now I think I see where the misunderstanding is, a matter of terminology; I was talking about "sympathetic" resonance, not the generic (mechanical) string-level resonance such as the case you mention :)
