NS3 - Faulty key only when wheel-morph in use

Post by NorfolkPaul »

I'm disappointed to discover a fault with my NS3 Compact tonight.
When any control is morph-assigned to the Wheel, the level of that control jumps erratically when I press the "C2" key. No issues noticed when any other key is pressed.
I first noticed the issue when using a Synth which had the Frequency assigned to the Wheel and the sound appeared to cut out occasionally. Unlike the NS2, you no longer have the LEDs around that controller so it wasn't obvious at first.

To demonstrate the problem in this video, I've assigned the volume level in the Piano section. Watch the LEDs around the volume level when I press the C2 note. Also, you'll see that the LED level, despite being at 0, doesn't actually reach the lowest LED after it starts going crazy.

Anyone seen anything like this before? I don't know if it's a bad contact under the C2 key, the Wheel, a software glitch? It will be annoying to have to return it for repair so soon. I've only had the NS3 a couple of weeks and it's not as if there's plenty of stock floating around to get a straight swap/loan. At least I still have my NS2 for now, and it doesn't stop me continuing with my mission of manually replicating all my NS2 Programs for the moment.

EDIT: This issue was also occurring before I updated the OS to v1.12 tonight.

Just a quick update...
Nord Support saw my post here or on FB and contacted me before I even logged a call. That's very cool.
I then logged the issue officially and after emails with them via Nord in the UK (Sound Technology), they suspect it is the mod wheel cable and just needs reconnecting. They advised this is done by a Nord engineer of course but that I'm perfectly entitled to a replacement NS3 Compact as I've only had it a couple of weeks (but can have it repaired if I like).
I spoke with the shop (PMT, Birmingham) who assured me I could have a brand new NS3 Compact when stock is available, when ever that is, and swap at a branch closer to where I live. Top marks for customer service.

If there are any concerns about the mod-wheel issues reported, to be fair there have only been a very small number and I wonder if it was just a few of the earliest stock. I've only had mine a couple
of weeks or so, but it was a shop display unit so could have been one of the first batch. I have full confidence in Nord's build quality and if you have any difficulties they are very quick to help and resolve issues.

You might want to open up the NS3 and check the wheel connector, seems to be an easy fix to what is a very common NS3 problem.

Did it leave Nord that way or does the wheel connector simply come loose easily?

Since Nord is monitoring this thread maybe they can answer this question.

I wouldn't be surprised if it did, but I can't say for sure. I mentioned in a similar post that I had tried a "brand new out of the box" Compact at a shop in London (Denmark St), last month. The wheel didn't work at all, which I tried specifically as I had read about this from others. Again, this must have been a very early unit. I couldn't believe they had it in stock to take away that day... imagine the excitement! Anyway... I had to leave it with them to sort out and ended up purchasing from a shop with a local branch, mostly for the convenience should it need returning for any reason. Those who have recently reconnected the cable themselves say it's easy and have assured us the connection is decent and wouldn't expect it to come off. Now that I've reported it, I'll wait and take the replacement, just in case.

I guess the name of the street implies a direct connection to Scandinavia somehow, explaining why they had stock

Wow, you have same issue on the C2 note too. I haven't opened mine up to check the connector as I'm going for a replacement unit when it's available, but was hopeful that's all it is. If you haven't already, please raise a support ticket with Nord via their website, and copy/paste a link to this discussion, it may be helpful for them.

Issue is that key touches connector for morph wheel. Oficially confirmed by Nord. So if somebody has this issue - contact your dealer.

Oh no. I'm seeing the same issue. The mod wheel does its own bizarre thing when I'm playing, and hitting that low "C" hard will jump it back to normal.
