Problem with pedal noise (NS2EX)

Post by Eumel »

Hi folks,

I have a problem with the pedal noise produced by my NS2EX with the help of Nord's triple pedal. Most of the time (not always!!!), even if I press the sustain pedal very slow, the produced pedal noise is very loud. I set its level already to -6dB but it is still way too loud. I found out, that it is also dependent on the selected piano sample. Unfortunately the problem is worst with the nice and fragile sound of the mellow upright sample (Lrg). I'm not 100% shure, but to me it seems that this problem is existing not from the beginning but since some time. Maybe my pedal is broken? Does anybody else have a similar problem? Any help is appreciated as it is really annoying... :wtf:

Thanks

Eumel

Hi Eumel, I also have observed that the Pedal Nosie seems to be louder when you press the pedal slowly and softer when pressing it fast... I have tried it both with my "DYI Triple Pedal" (so maube not 100% reliable) and using a continuous pedal via MIDI (using an external master keyboard: have you tried this too? It may help to conform if it is a generalized behaviour or a problem of your pedal).

Thanks maxpiano, but I want to understand the root cause of that problem. Is the pedal's poti broken?

Nord Triple pedal doesn't have a pot but rubber switches, just like a keyboard (yes). To test it, monitor the MIDI data generated while you slowly press it, you should see some progressive stepped values of CC 64, if so all OK. Or ... Just open it and check/clean the contacts

from your description, I have to wonder whether perhaps the most likely scenario is that the contacts inside the pedal are dirty. This is the type of behavior we see on keys when contacts become fouled. There are two contacts on the sustain pedal to establish velocity, so if one or the other fouls, the resulting velocity data fed to the instrument will be skewed one way or the other. And, obviously, the volume level of the pedal noise is dependent upon accurate velocity data. Those pedals use the same type of rubber bubble contacts as the keys, so cleaning them is usually a "simple" matter of blasting some compressed air across the contact surfaces. Complete disassembly of the pedal to get to that point is the hard part...

Hi Pablo,

I wad able to fix the pedal. It works fine again. I used som Isopropanol to clean the pads on pcb and the contacts on the rubber.

Cheers,

Eumel

Hi all,
I cannot get the Sostenuto and Soft pedals working on my Stage 2 with the tripple pedal, it was working before, do you think it's the same issue, dirt on contacts?

I'd first of all ensure that in the System settings you still have Sustain Type = Triple
