Led Zeppelin sounds

Post by olbap90 »

Hi guys,

This is my first post here, actually it's a request. I have a nord stage 2 and i'm playing some led zeppelin songs with my band, so i would like you to recommend me some patches, samples, sounds or whatever you want to call them for the following songs :

-Stairway to heaven (both EP and flute-like sounds)
-No quarter
-Thank you
-Mist Mountain Hop
-Since I've Been Loving You
-Kashmir

By the way, i'm not asking only for external samples, they could also be already in the NS2.

Thanks in advance !

Ok, i'm going on 15-20 year old memory and i don't have my NS2 in front of me, so here's my best shot:

Stairway to Heaven - the studio version is multitracked recorders, if i recall correctly, though they played mellotron on tour at some point. I'd probably just use the mellotron flute sample and be done with it, though there may be something with more of a reed tone to use in there. The EP is probably the Hohner Electrapiano, I'd say barring a sample in there somewhere the closest you might get would be a Wurli with the high end boosted and played hard.

No Quarter - I believe the studio version is the Hohner again but I'm farily certain JPJ played Rhodes live, at any rate I've always used a Rhodes for this, deep mark 1 with deep tremolo.

Thank You - Straight Hammond, no percussion, no vibrato, start with something like 008800000 and add higher drawbars until you have it.

Misty Mountain Hop - the Hohner again, I'd use a Wurli like above barring somethimg better

Since I've Been Loving You - one of my favorites.. Hammond, maybe a 686504403 or something in that area, again, play with it. Percussion, if I recall correctly.. make sure your drummer uses a squeaky kick pedal..

Kashmir - oy. maybe layer some of the orchestral samples, or strings and brass?

if i get some time alone with my NS2 today I'll see what else I can do.

First of all thanks for the very complete answer, I haven't tried them out yet, couldn't get my hands on my NS2 lately I'm afraid. About since I've been loving you, or "the blues" as I like to call it (shorter name, faster to type, better) I actually prefer the live versions where JPJ plays an EP, which should be a Rhodes, as you mentioned that that's what he used live. Anyway, please correct me if I'm wrong, I'll try a Rhodes anyway and see If I like it, and of course i'll let you know about the rest of the songs too once I play them.
