Nord Stage 2 EX - Recording my Piano songs/performance to PC

Post by Enoch Soames »

I use to play acoustic pianos since i learned to play. Now I bought a Nord Stage 2 Ex and I want to record my song performances on PC.
Wich is the best way to do that, do I need aditional software/hardware? Thanks!

There is a cheaper way and a better way. With either option, you need to achieve connectivity, and you need some software.

The cheaper way to do this is to connect a line from the audio out jack(s) to a sound input jack on your PC. Your PC might have a 1/8 inch (3.1 mm?) stereo "line in" jack, and if it does then you could get a cable that has a 1/4 inch stereo headphone jack on one end (connect it to the Nord headphone jack), and a 1/8 inch stereo headphone jack on the other end. But it is possible that your PC might not have a 1/8 inch stereo "line in" jack, so I suggest reading the specs for your PC.

The better way: Even if your PC has a 1/8 inch stereo "line in" jack, this would not be a high quality audio interface. If you find yourself becoming dissatisfied with the quality of the recordings, you might purchase a separate audio interface which would have 1/4 female audio jacks, and which would support a USB connection to your PC. Until you do this, you would be using the A/D converters inside your PC, which probably are not great. Getting a higher quality audio interface will help with this, but this will probably matter much more if you intend to record vocals, as opposed to just the keyboard sounds from your Nord.

If you have a Windows PC, you can get the Audacity software, which is free. An Apple probably has something else built-in (I am not an Apple guy). If you are just getting started, Audacity is a fine place to start, and you can learn some basics without spending money, which will help you make a more educated choice later on if you decide to get a better audio recording setup.

I use Ableton but Garage Band is Apple's free offering.

I took a look at Audio Interfaces. I want to record my Piano songs performances (if possible adding a bass/drums backing track).
Are the Yamaha AG06 or Focusrite scarlett-2i4 a good choice?
Wich do you think is the best choice?

I have the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. Works great and not too expensive.
