Nord Stage 2 to Yamaha P-250 MIDI

Post by lucas_phillips »

Can someone help me connect my new Nord Stage 2 to my Yamaha p250 through midi. I have never used a midi connection before. I would like to use midi to play the nord piano sounds on my p250 while using the nord keyboard for organ.

The simplest way would be to use the Dual Keyboard mode:

Manual p.54/Controlling the Stage 2 with an external keyboard or MIDI device/Dual Kb

What you need to do is this:

!. Make a Program with your organ on the Slot A and your piano sound on Slot B.

2. Connect a MIDI lead from MIDI OUT on your Yamaha p250 to the MIDI IN on your Stage.

3. Set Dual Keyboard mode ON by pressing the [Shift] button at the same time as the Slot B button. This should turn on the Dual Kb LED below the Slot B button.

This sets the Stage's keyboard to play the organ sound you put in slot A while letting your p250 play the piano sound you set in Slot B.

Nearly. Unfortunately there is a matter of matching the MIDI channels. The p250 must be set to transmit on the same MIDI channel as the Dual Kb channel is set to receive on.

Here's what to do. Play your p250. If you hear the Nord's piano sound, congratulations, you just won first prize.

Unfortunately you may hear nothing. If this happens, look at the MIDI LED in the center of the control panel. If it flashes when you play the 250, then this means that everything is ok but the MIDI channels are not matched. You can set the MIDI channels correctly either by altering the MIDI send channel in your 250 or altering the MIDI receive channel in the Stage - it doesn't matter which you do, you just need to get the MIDI channels the same on both instruments. Check the MIDI channel for the Stage by looking here (also in the Manual p.44):

MIDI Menu/MIDI Dual KB Channel/

What is it set to? It should be set to any of MIDI 1 - 16, NOT USB 1 - 16.

If you know how to set the MIDI OUT channel on your p250, then set it to this number and it should all work. If you don't know how to do that then we'll leave the p250 alone and match its MIDI channel by changing the settings here from 1 - 16 until you hear sound - [it will most probably be channel 1]. We're not doing anything clever here, we're just guessing the p250s MIDI channel by trying everything in turn here until it works!

Let us know if this all works for you - or if you can't get it to work, we'll keep trying until you've got it sorted. :)

Note also that there's a switch on the back of the Yamaha P-250 that switches the midi output from the traditional midi DIN connectors to the USB to host (midi over usb). You'll want to make sure that it's selected properly.
